Hi from Adelaide,
New here. Need help please! Got a pair that laid 6 eggs for the first time. All hatched but the last 3 hatches, I found them under the big ones and have not been fed as the crops were empty. One has already died... found it underneath and looked like a flat dried soft leather. The other one, still breathing but not wriggling and it's not making any sound... I went mixing some hand raising mix... followed instruction per age of chicks as in 1part to 6 part warm water. I tried hand feeding it with a syringe... was looking at buying a crop needle but am not so confident using it. So, I fed one by giving a tiny drop on the right side of its beak. It went swallowing and filled it's crop a bit.... Kept it warm on a slightly warm wheat bag. Few minutes later it it stretched out it's legs and motionless... it died. There's still a slightly big one in the nest about two weeks old... noticed that it's hardly fed at all.... need help what shall I do? Did I kill the other one that tried to feed?

It's hard to pinpoint the problem here. Very warm formula can burn the chick's crop whereas cold one will cause digestion problem. What was the temperature of the formula?

Dont blame yourself chicks become ill very quickly and sometimes its too late. maybe your hen is finding it hard to feed them all? How many chicks are in the nest? Can you adopt some of her chicks out to any other pairs? Is the two week old quiet or is it calling for food? There are so many things that it could be. If you think the two week old is a little quiet and doesnt have a full crop.take it out the nest and give it a feed with the hand rearing formula then return it back to the nest to see if she will continue to feed. The last resort is to hand rear the chick,BUT this is a long and constant commitment that you need to think about. I am sure some of the other members will have some information on what you can do. Look at the threads that budgiesbuddy has put on as well. sue

always feed from the left hand side as feeding from the right can result in food going into the wind pipe
