For Moulting Budgies - Basic Egg Food Recipe
I have prepared some egg food for my budgies as they are going through a moult at the moment and I thought they could do with the extra protein.
Here is how I put it together:
Hard boil an egg for 25 minutes then cool it, cut it in half and peel off the shell. It has to be properly hard boiled otherwise your birds can get ill.
Grate about 2 inches worth of peeled carrot, and a washed floret of broccoli along with the egg into a bowl
OPTIONAL: I added a pinch of "Guardian Angel" as I had some handy but you don't have to do this.
Mix it all together and serve.
Simple to make and very nutritious for your birds, moulting means that they need extra protein in order to produce new feathers.
IMPORTANT: Don't leave this out for more than a couple of hours and make sure you remove any traces of vegetable and egg that have been thrown around by the birds.

I have some dry egg and biscuit which I am currently sprinkling over their seed for the same reason. It got hot in a hurry so budgie feathers everywhere Your recipe sounds more appertising, Marianne.

I tried that egg food that you can buy and my budgies would not go near it no matter what I did with it. Dry, wet, on their seed, with their veg. But they love real egg

But they love real egg They are little cannibals, really!! I know they eat some of it at least, and if that is all, good. I really should try them with a proper egg

It's not cannibalistic, the eggs are infertile!

I'll try this mix with my birds. I've tried giving them boiled egg a few times before but they never touch it. Maybe with a bit of broccoli and carrot mixed in, they'll try it.

I gave this a go when I read it on your blog.
They nibbled at it a few times and seemed to enjoy it. Had to waste quite a bit though as the recipe made loads, wonder if it would be Okay to freeze or stick some in the fridge so different days?

I usually half it and put some in the fridge for the next day.

Marianne PJ and PoPo seem to be coming up to their first molt, would you recommend this for young birds as well? And if so should I start now (not 100% sure if it's starting or not) or wait till feathers start coming out in numbers?

It is never going to hurt them, Robert. An occasional feed of the egg food even if they aren't moulting is still good for them. It is simply that growing new feathers is very draining on the body, so the extra protein is especially good for them then. Young birds need it as much as the older ones, maybe even more, as they are still filling out.

Add a small tin of corn to the mix Marianne , i always give it a wash before serving, the little bit of salt in the corn will not harm the budgies.

Hi Marianne - was reading through all your posts and was thinking of giving this a go as I'd like to be able to give all the help I can to Monts - my only question is how often do you feed it to them whilst they are in moult? Would it be once or week or less? I dont know but would like to find out more - thanks!
