Lovely birds Robert. I really enjoyed how you described the whole budgie journey with pictures. Been to Tokyo, it’s a lovely place and I love everything about it. The only thing I hate is their pet shops. I am surprised that they refused to give you the budgies at two weeks old. Normally they sell chicks at 15 days. A family was sold two weeks old chicks after giving them a 3 minutes feeding demo. The chicks nearly died with them and the vet had to save them. BTW, love your commentary during the video.

That's what we got, a five minute lesson on how to feed them and we were sent on our way. I went back to the store and talked to the manager and told him that from what I know now it should have been obvious to the person who gave us the lesson and a quick health check of the birds that PoPo had damaged feathers even before we brought her home and either the staff member was totally unqualified or sold us a sick bird knowingly.

You've got a great outdoor set up for them there, Robert. You're a very conscientious Dad.
Even though they aren't spending much time in their cage, if you can find a wide one in your travels, it would be a good idea. If they're going to have ongoing problems with flight, all the perches would be lower down and they'd be able to navigate the cage and get more floor room to potter about as well.
If you do decide to get another, also look for a cage with horizontal bars. They can climb those much easier than vertical ones.

It's something we are thinking about for when we move especially if PoPo loses her feathers again. For the moment she is flying around with much more confidence and spending a lot less time on the floor thankfully.
The only wide cages I've seen in the stores are barely wider then the round one we have but I know we can order one on-line.

I had to get mine online. The stores all sold bad cages.

This is the site on some good food for your budgies. It includes wild grasses that are good for them. It's by a Czech guy, and he hasn't translated all the pages into English. But the diet section is. www.adnort.webs.com/My_html_Cookery_BookE.htmlAccording to my avian vet, the best most vitamin rich fruit and veges to feed (aside from quality seed) are; Carrot, Sweet potato Butternut pumpkin Corn Peas Leafy greens - like spinach or Asian greens like Bok Choy or Asian broccoli. Raw beetroot Grapefruit Rockmelon Mango Kiwifruit Pomegranate (never tried this one myself) You can feed other more "wet' veges (like lettuce) but they do tend to make their poops go sloppy, and they don't have as many nutrients in them, so what's the point. The very dark lettuces (like those Italian style ones - Romaine etc) are much better.

Great info. We've tried carrots and apples but they didn't show much interests in it.
I'm still under the weather from my cold and these guys really don't like to let me sleep. The second I get in bed they fly over and start exploring me ears. lol, now they are trying to help me type. The more I get how social budgies are the more I get what a horrible situation a lot of budgies live in. all those poor budgies stuck in a small cage with a mirror and a swing and no friends.

It's awful to think of the lives of some highly intelligent birds. Same thing occurred to me, once I got to know my little fella. Imagine how depressed and bored they must be. It stunts their ability to learn, too, if they have no interaction.
I work from home so, like yours, mine is also very socialised, tame and playful as he's out of his cage with me all day.

Your homemade play area and cages are brill Robert. Really shows that you have thought about your birds needs.
Yes the round cage is not idea but if they have lots of out of cage time and interaction with you and eachother then they'll do great (as they already are)

I just love how their characters are really starting to show.
What's funny is tha PJ spents the most time on my shoulder and flying to me and playing but hates being scratched.
