Hey everyone, it's been a while. I've noticed something with my budgie Oliver. His right eye is slightly swollen and red. It's just his right eye. None of the other 3 birds have any problems with their eyes. I would like to take him to a vet but the vet near me knew almost nothing about my budgies mite problem last time. They seem to specialise only in cats and dogs. Here's a pic. Tell what you guys think...

samwiseg has just dealt with an eye problem with one of her birds, and may have helpful info. You can try Golden Eye Ointment, I think that's what it's called. Available at the pharmacy.

Golden Eye ointment is a topical antibiotic; just don't tell who serves you that you want it for your budgie. If you have trouble getting that, then a cool wet black teabag can help sooth the irritation. Use it like a compress.

Hi blueemu As stace said I did have some trouble recently with my bird Wiggy's right eye. Does you bird rub it a lot as well? As it maybe something like conjunctivitis. When I took him to the vet the prescribed Tiacil - one drop twice a day for 10 days. It seemed to do the trick. It does however seem you will need a prescription to get the medication so you would still need to see your vet. Here is what it looks like: Best of luck! Here's hoping your vet shall be able to help please let us know how you get on xx

Thanks for the replies everyone. It may be best for me to go to the pet store and see if they have anything for treating eye problems. I wouldn't be surprised if they have some type of ointment. The pet store owner seems to know more about birds than the vet. I was just really concerned because Dr. Google said eye problems can be associated with some type of very severe illness. If I can't get my hands on something from the pet store, I'll try the pharmacists, and if needed go to the vet for the prescription. I'll keep you guys posted on what I do next. samwiseg he doesn't seem to rub it at all. Generally his behaviour is exactly the same. I hope that's a good sign, and I'm glad to see Wiggy made a full recovery.

I had the same problem with one of my boys last year, first the vet thought it was feather irritation, but it turned out to be conjunctivitis, the cream I got from the vet had the same stuff in it as GOLDEN EYE OINTMENT from the chemist, but it did the trick. Hope you get something to help your little bud. Good luck.

Hey Jellybean I'm glad to know the stuff sold at the pet store works. I've been really busy the last few days, but I did get to phone the pet store and they do keep eye ointment. The good news is that Oliver's eye is clearing up. I haven't done anything to it as yet, but it seems the swelling is down and the redness is going away. Perhaps it was just a bite from an insect?
If it flares up again, I'll go get the ointment.

It might simply have been a bit of dust, a feather, anything really that irritated it. Quite often these things simply need a wash out, rather than proper treatment.

Hi everyone, i noticed one of my budgies right eye has been badly swollen and became red. I have taken her to a different cage, and applied cold black tea compress. I bought golden eye ointment from pharmacy and started to apply twice a day, today is second day, but her eye did not get better. Before she was rubbing her eye against perch, at least she stopped it. I think her eye has been inflamented by dirt or something else. is this ointment good for her eye, how long will it take to see some progress, i would be glad if you share your experience, thanks

Depending on how badly her eye was affected will decide how quickly she returns to normal, if that is all that her problem is. If she doesn't show any signs of improvement after a number of days, you may need to get her looked at by a vet; she may need more than just a topical antibiotic. How long you wait is up to you; I am not a vet, and she isn't my bird, sorry I can't offer any more than that.
