How do you feed him the milk thistle seeds? I tried with these with my first budgie - the seeds are so hard I had to crush them for him, and even then I don't know whether he ate them ...... I spent a great deal of time cracking shell and trying to recover the seed, all seemingly for naught. I have just re-read through the tread ....... I had already written the above; take no notice!!! Glad to hear, though, that things have improved for Snowy since March. The other things you can try are dandelion and aloe vera. Both are also good liver detox herbs and easily sourced. While all of the dandelion can be used, the root is the best.

That's interesting about dandelion. I dig these up from our lawn all of the time – roots and all – to feed to my degus. The budgies get the leaves but from now on I will be feeding them some of the roots too. How would you feed them aloe vera? Just take a tip off a plant?

Yes, you just give them a bit broken off and left in the cage, or you can make them a drink with the pulp, or soak the leaves ...... someone had a recipe for that somewhere ..... but for Snowy to get the most out of it, I suggest making him a drink with the pulp (as strong as he will drink it) or simply try him with a bit and hang it in the cage.
