Hello, it's me again - hope I'm not making a nuisance of myself, but I have a query.
My little bird (approx five months old) has got tiny spots or blobs of 'white' in her (white) wing feathers. Not in the longer 'uplift' feathers or tail feathers, but these white spots are in the feathers that are shortest - the ones you don't cut, if you clip a bird's wings (and I don't).
They look as though she has got something in them - a human equivalent would be crumbs in someone's moustache - but they aren't foreign bodies. If they were, she shake them loose when she fluffs up or flies. They also have a vague resemblance to spots of TippEx (and once again I know that it isn't this).
She definitely has been shedding little short wing feathers, so I'm presuming they are stubbs or stumps where the feathers have come out. Would this be right? I have tried to tease them away with my fingers but of course when she's in my hand her feathers are compressed, and she isn't wild about me doing this as you can imagine.
Should it look as though there are stubs, when a feather falls out? Is five months the right age to be losing feathers? Any wisdom gratefully received as ever.

If you don't ask you don't learn It is quiet at the moment, some of the more experience people will be around later, they usually are. I have had Jo 16 months, Pippin 2 weeks and still ask questions.

Thanks, suesbird that is exactly my thinking! How is Pippin? It's a really lovely name, hopefully for a really lovely bird. I do like the name very much. I wish I'd thought harder about Bimbo's name, tbh. I often call her 'puppy' or 'pups' which I think I prefer.

He is settling in fine, he keeps catching his tummy on something sharp and made it bleed again, trying to budgie proof the house, Jo never got into trouble but he does. I am still trying to get them used to one another. You will be fine, I guess it is the moult but wait for someone else to come on. You will have to post more pictures

Aw, thank you! I am very attached to her. We have a very strong budgie-owner bond - sometimes to the point where she becomes a bit of a nusiance, such as this morning I was drying my hair, she was on my shoulder, I put the hairdryer on (which she's seen and heard a few times before) but she didn't fly off straightaway, making it difficult to dry my hair. I guess she likes the warm air on her. I don't mind her being on me - in fact I really like it. It must be a worry when Pippin draws blood! I remember reading one of your posts that sounded mildly panic stricken, saying you didn't want another hour like the one you'd had. Blood always looks so alarming I'd be stressing madly if Bimbo bled. I suppose it must be the moult giving her little extra white bits. There's something new every day to notice, I'm finding - noises, poo, behaviour, feathers, feeding... maybe it take a year to go through the cycle.

It sounds as though what you are looking at are the beginning of her pin feathers coming through. These are surrounded by a keratin sheath in the beginning to help the feather break through the skin follicle without damaging the feather. Once the feather has grown through enough this keratin sheath will drop off with a little help from the bird, by scratching, rubbing, or being preened by another bird. You can help her there by giving her a spray misting of water, providing her with a bath, or giving her a scratch, if she will let you. This time of year is a common time for budgies to moult and her age is also right for this to be happening as well.

Thank you, Hezz. She's scratting and scratching madly right now, as I'm typing. It must be a job of work keeping all your feathers clean and under control.
Hope she hasn't got mites! I think she's just doing the normal stuff.

They can be so itchy, and yes, staying beautiful while going through a moult must be hard.
