You will see to the left on your profile you have an option for Karma. Users can either give or take away.
I can remove this function. Just wanted to know what you all thought first?

What if there was just an exalt button, to click when someone does a most excellent post that you want to draw others' attention to?

I don't think karma is necessary. I have seen it on other forums where members just give each other karma to boost each others rating when there is nothing special about the posts
I think that if you think a post is good it would be better to post a reply praising the post

I think giving a karma is fine. It tells about the reputation of the member and how helpful he/she was to other members queries.
But you should remove the taking the karma away function. It creates problems.

I think a like button would be better . It's on a gardening forum i was a member of. I think it works quite well, and saves on 3-5 posts just saying "thankyou". It can occasionally get out of hand though, with as Nev said people liking anything. But it might work,, i quite liked the system. Just a idea .

Every forum has it and at every forum it's abused. PM should be enough but at least you named it right, exalt and smite, that's brilliant. Let's face it, sometimes you just get an itching to do some smiting.

Can't take the credit for the naming Robert, it came as default!
But I can get code to eradicate it. Smite the Karma, har har!
