Hi We have just got our budgie, Tommy, last week. He is 11 weeks old and doesn't fly well his tail feather fell off playing and he doesn't appear to have flight feathers. I have spoken to the breeder who said after his first moult he will fly. He's healthy and happy. Eats well. Anyone else's budgie luke this. Tyia.

Do you have an avian vet that might take a look? There are some very experienced and helpful people on here and I'm sure they will be able to give you some answers.

A photo would be good, but I hate the sound of " breeder who said after his first moult he will fly." This sounds to me like a breeder who knows perfectly well that there is something wrong with the bird and palmed it off to some unsuspecting soul! But we do need a photo to be able to say for sure. A budgie should be well and truly flying before it's first moult!!! Somewhere around the five to six week mark, if not a bit earlier for the more advanced, is when they start to become airborne.

Exactly as Hezz says, your bird should be well and truly flying by now. The breeders comment is absolute tosh. My first bud Charlie we got when he was just 6 weeks old, removed from mum as she had damaged his cere. He wouldn't stop flying when he was let lose in the lounge. Has your bird got a breeders ring on it's leg?
