Love the photos, SQ. She looks very content with Kian, sorry about your finger. At least you know she is feeling you when you massage. Everyone says physio is painful so it isn't too surprising that she is fighting back. You are all doing such good things; keep it up - the good work and the photos, please.

I have noticed that Dittos "ankle" joints are very large compared to the other buds. They are not red or warm though. The good news is that she waggles her legs more and has started using the right one more too. I think this will be a long road with lots of stops along the way. I have no idea what the destination will be or even if I will know when we have reached it unless she is fully mobile like normal buds, which I find highly unlikely. I am having sleepless nights wondering how I can help her more and if there will ever be any real change in her. Then she does something that keeps me going and wanting more. She's an amazing little bird, she plays and climbs, rolls around with her toys and loves to lay on her mirror just staring at her reflection. I just want so much more for her. Here is her ankle, I could only get the left one as she holds the right one close to her and I couldn't hold the camera and her leg at the same time. The right leg isn't as big, strangely enough, even though that's the less mobile one. What are your opinions?

Is it a swelling SQ or a deformity? I'm not sure to be honest. It's not soft like it would be if it had fluid in it and she doesn't pull it away when I touch it. I even gently massage it and flex it on both sides and she seems to enjoy it, going very quiet and still and closing her eyes. Shirls, yes they can get arthritis when older.

Humans don't have to be old to get arthritis though, a girl I used to work with had rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis, which is the more common form, is generally a wear-and-tear/aging process. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease; I am not certain that budgies can be affected by it.
That joint really is over-sized, isn't it? With what you say, it would seem as though it is some sort of abnormality, rather than an injury. It is great that she is "waggling" her legs more, but you can tell from her toes how little movement comes naturally to her feet and legs. It is odd looking at her there lying on her back with her toes almost all straight out. I think the only way to answer the question of why/what with her joint would be an X-ray.

I've been thinking that too Hezz. The only thing I am worried about is that there may be anaesthetic involved which worries me with such a small bird. I will have to make some enquiries, it may help with further physio if I have a better idea of whaere her problems lie.

Not sure how you are set, vet-wise, but the guys (and girls) I use are really good about using the very minimum amount of anaesthetic, just enough to get the job done. You know, with her being the way she is, there is the possibility that they may be able to take a decent xray without putting her under. They managed to do that for Smudge the last time as she wasn't really strong enough. It may compromise the quality of the photos though .....
