To answer the question in as brief as possible post, I started my working life as an apprentice in a weaving mill. For the rest of my life I have been involved with engineering of one sort or another. I gained the structural engineering knowledge by making mistakes as I learned. It's a good job I never tried building bridges.

If the crack is due to stress, it is probably not worth repairing. It would suggest that the cage was badly engineered in the first place.
