I'm sure there's information somewhere on this forum but I can't find it and yes I know I'll probably need to go to the vet but I'm so reluctant to do that, ok why? Bonnie is so adorable and so curious, I'd hate taking her to a vet to cause her stress or worse! Bonnie is older than I first thought I think, although she's still young ...bear with her little claws appear to be very long and I'm surprised because Mischief has never had any problems at all, nor my other birds as far as I can remember. I think she's starting to catch them though when Tyler is pestering chasing her! Trying to get a picture is almost impossible but they are longer than either Mischief or Tyler's (although he's still tiny ) so......I really don't know why I'm rabbiting on here except if someone can either direct me to the thread about nail clipping or .....something....I'd appreciate it!

It is advisable not to clip budgies claws unless it is absolutely necessary. As once you start doing it you will have to continue clipping on a regular basis. You can take them to the vet to have it done or alternatively use nail clippers but you must know how to do this correctly before proceeding. This is what the nail is like and you must not cut into the blood supply: But again I must stress that only clip if necessary. I.e if they are long but not stopping the bird or hindering it in any way then do not clip. But if the bird is struggling to move or getting caught a lot because of the nails being too long then clipping might be the only solution. I hope that helps!

Thank you so much Sam, that's very helpful I'm now wondering if perhaps they aren't that long at all, just her 'mutation'? I'll keep an eye out for a while and 'try' to get a photo sometime before I take any 'drastic' action. Many thanks I feel better Just a thought, they have natural branches but is there anything else that I can perhaps do to help her?

Make sure the branches are big enough, so the nails come into contact with the branch when perching.

Watch Bonnie while she is walking on a flat surface, such as the kitchen bench, a table etc. If her toes are not raised up off the surface due to the claws, please do not clip them! Mostly people clip when it really is not necessary; just because they look long to you doesn't mean they need to be fiddled with. Also remember that the hens have sharper claws then the boys ...... (to help them hang on when .... ahem) so, please, think long and hard before going in hard and clipping because you think she needs it.
Edit: Make sure that you have different sizes in your perches .... this gives the best stimulation for both the nails and feet ..... most budgies will rest without their claws clenched around a perch; if they are, then usually you will find there is something amiss with the bird. More importantly give her stimulating things to do so that she is clambering and climbing all over the place, and working for her food, toys etc.

As my buds like to sit on ours and I feel that helps with wearing down their claws a bit Alfie looks like he is on a surf board
