Lol yea, he went at it. >.< I decided to turn the radio on for Kiwi today and he loves listening to the music. He's been chirping, bobbing his head, and pacing to some of the songs.

Great news, mine love music too. I leave the radio all day for them. Glad you are starting to enjoy Kiwi and not so worried. I am sure mum will too, wait until he sits on her hand.

Yep, Suesbird, not worried anymore. He is a joy to watch, so amusing! I am starting to leave the radio on as he seems to enjoy it. She already likes him. He followed her as she moved by the cage. I don't know if its her red shirt or what. xD He is settling in very well. In the morning and evening he tenses when I move around, but during the day he doesn't mind. Hoping he starts to trust me and not think I'm out there to get him.

^.^ I hope he doesn't start preferring my mom over me. He seems to really like her. But he likes me too and calms down when I talk to him.

They come to me when they are scared or upset but aggravate him to death. . You will be fine. Just give her a big lecture and tell Kiwi you are the mom in this household so please follow the rules.

Bless little Kiwi ... he's coming out of his shell. Don't worry, if you do all the taming work and are the holder of the golden millet - he'll favour you. Always best if one person does the taming too - then once Kiwi is more confident you can introduce your mum. A budgie who has freedom beyond his cage fully develops his personality and is much happier, confident and cheeky! In terms of training, folk choose different methods (there's lots of good advice on this forum). After it was evident that Teddy was never ever going to get on my finger from the get go, I opted for the perch method (using a wood perch) - telling him to "step up" and "off" to put him back on the cage perch - then I introduced my finger along the perch - then eventually removed the perch. I did this for about 10-15 mins about 3-4 times a day - I'd say he understood the concept after the first day. The video below shows the perch method (and was done with a mature bird - much harder) - I did use millet during my perch and finger training as Teddy was very, very suspicious (he was 3.5 months when I got him). Basically you need a lot of patience - but it's worth it Personally, I would get him perch-trained at the very least, before you let him out his cage, otherwise it will be stressful for him and you when you try to get him back in his cage. I put a ladder on top of Teddy's cage - and he return to that eventually on his first trip - helped having something to land on - he stepped up on the perch and I could put him back in the cage. Good luck!

I'm going to try the finger training first before the perch training, when it is time for that. When do you think I should start hand taming, out of curiosity? Just want to be sure I don't do it too soon.
And no worries, he be hand tamed or perch trained before I let him out of the cage.

Hi DreamerHorse, I started perch training after about 5 days. But just sitting near him and talking to him in the first days is a form of taming. I like the way the girl in the video allows the budgie to move away - I found Teddy favoured one perch in his cage and he would eventually return to this after running away - so that's were I focused my perch training. Allowing him to come back of his own will was important - I think it helped me gain his trust. It sounds like Kiwi is starting to settle in. It's nice to hear how much you are enjoying him - they are wonderful little creatures. They really do become your little friend.

That's good to hear Fluffball. I have been doing a lot of talking to him. Cooing, telling him he's a pretty bird, saying his name, etc. I really am enjoying him. He's a amazing little guy. Love him. I decided to try hand taming today. Just getting him to eat millet out of my hand. First I slowly offered the millet to his beak. He didn't take the offer at first, but then he took a bite! After he got the first bite it was like he was almost willing to do anything to get the second. I'd slowly move my finger up the millet after every successful bite, till I got him eating it with my palm turned up. I decided that we'd made enough progress then and gave it a break. I want to get him to the point where he steps into my hand for millet, and then try the step up training. I'm going to have to try to preserve millet though, I only got six sprays! He's doing really good. I really can't wait till I can get him out of the cage on my hand.

You are doing so well, also do the perch training as it is easier to get them off high places instead of doing step ups on furniture. Also wash the millet first and let it dry, run cold water over it and then leave on a window cill or radiator to dry. You have made really good progress, it is so satisfying isn't it. hope you enjoy your weekend together.
