Teddy had his first drop of ivermectin this evening (we felt we needed to act sooner rather than later). After application, I gave Ted his seed bell (absolutely loves seed bells - I have to remove them otherwise he'd eat an entire one in a day!). He has spent a lot of time scratching his head this evening - so much so that I am now scratching my head...getting paranoid about these little creepy crawlies. We were thinking about how Teddy got them - the one thing that came to mind was the fact that the Japanese Koi Company sell a huge range of exotic bird species all housed next door to each other. It would be very easy for mites to hop from host to host. We absolutely adore Teddy and wouldn't swap him for the world, but I would think twice about getting another budgie from that store. I think I will alert them to the fact Teddy had mites - he was always overly scratching his head. Poor soul.

Glad you have the gear and it is strike one for Team Teddy. He could have gotten them from the store, definitely, he could also have gotten them from being outside, if he does get to be outside, or even if you have visited the store and come home and played with him. Hope he feels better and stops scratching very soon.

If you are scratching your head a lot you may need someone to apply the ivermectin at the back of your neck.

Update ... The battle against the mites continues. Teddy has now had two doses of Invermectin - I'm thoroughly washing his cage/toys down twice a week (on the day of treatment and halfway until the next dose). I see a big improvement - Teddy is definitely not scratching his head as much (and it tends to be only first thing in the morning). He also seems a lot happier :-) Some days I find none (they tend to crawl on his cover and top of the cage (which is white plastic), but this morning I found four and two had fed on Teddy as they were full of blood when I destroyed them. I realise that he needs one dose a week for three weeks, but will this do the trick to get rid of them.
Just wondering why they are still feeding if he has received his dose?
P.S. On a positive note, Teddy is starting to talk - mumbo jumbo mainly!

Sounds like the treatment is working. Hopefully by the 3rd week, those horrible things will stop bothering Teddy completely. Keep us posted.

The reason you need to dose weekly for three weeks, and why you are still finding some, but not many is that the dose you put on kills the adults. Any eggs that are around will not be killed and will hatch in that week, you apply more a week later, killing off those that have hatched in the previous week, by the third week's dosing all eggs should be hatched and you are killing off those late arrivals. This is why you find less and less each week but still see some. If, after the third week you still find some in his cage, by all means give a fourth dose.

Thanks Hezz that's really helpful information - makes sense now. I'm so pleased to be winning the battle against the blood suckers. Teddy seems so much happier and more active too since we started treating him.

That is good news, then. Seems like they were giving him a touch-up. I meant to add to my explanation, as most of us who have had children know the pain that nits can be to get rid of - treating the mites is very much like treating for lice.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Teddy became red mite free after 4 doses of Invermectin (one does per week). He is a transformed bird - alert and active, not lethargic anymore. Thanks to everyone who offered advice. I hope this thread helps others who might have to deal with those dreadful bloodsuckers!
