Poor Criswell has just vomited again. He's been totally fine since he stopped his meds although his poops were a bit wetter than normal this morning
I phoned the emergency vet and they looked up his records. The avian vet had noted that he should start treatment again if symptoms recur. The emergency service doesn't have an exotics vet and they said that there wasn't much they could do appart from presctibe metronidazole. Since we already have some they didn't see any reason to bring him in but said if he gets worse and we are really worried we could bring him along.
We managed to get him to take some metronidazole but it was a struggle. He is now resting on a perch. He looks warn out. I'll be phoning our avian vet first thing and will take him along if he wants to see him.
Criswell was so cute and friendly today. He's been out to play loads and he has been hopping about all over me. I'm now worrying that something that he's got off me has harmed him.

I just checked on Criswell and he is a lot more relaxed than he was. After the meds he was standing very upright with his legs stretched like he might fly at any moment and he stayed like that for a while, looking tense but now he's sitting much more normally. I'm not sure if he is sleeping or not but he does have 2 feet on the perch.
I'm feeling like I've let him down and that I've missed some sign that he was feeling poorly again but he has been very happy all week and eating loads too. He was making a little sneeze/cough noise after he was eating yesterday so maybe I should have taken that as a sign that he needed meds again. I feel like I know so little about what's normal for budgie despite reading up as much as I can.

I'm sorry to hear this, but I'm sure you're being way too hard on yourself. It sounds as if you have responded very quickly and are highly attentive. Poor little chap, but good that he has settled a bit. Keep us posted. And now - sleep!

Thanks birdguhl. I'm not sure that I'll get much sleep tonight but I will try. Last time I checked Criswell had moved to a different perch and he looked fairly comfortable. I could see him by looking up under his cover so I didn't disturb him.
It's such a shame that he's ill again as he's only just got comfortable around us again after the last batch of meds.
I'll be phoning the vets as soon as they open at 830am and will let you know how he is.

I don't think you will be the cause of his illness, I really don't see how. I would get him back onto the flagyl, if that is what the "good" vet suggested in the first place. I really hope you see improvement with him on his meds ....... c'mon Crizzie get better, please...... Edit: Metronidazole/flagyl ..... same thing, in case that was confusing.

Thanks Hezz.
I guess I've started thinking it's something to do with me is because each time he has committed it's been after he's been out to play with me. It wasn't straight after last night though but about half an hour later.

It might be the playing, rather than the out with you, bit that is upsetting him, if he is feeling a bit off. You know how you can be when sick yourself. Hopefully if you catch it early enough you will be able to nip it in the bud.

I called the vets but our vet isn't in yet this morning. The receptionist has put details in his message book and he'll call later.
Criswell is understandably very quiet this morning. He went to his food bowl and he has eaten a little bit. I watched him and he didn't just spit the seeds out. He shock his head a few times but didn't regurgitate. Then he scratched at his face and he's been sitting quietly on a perch. He just ate some seed from my hand and now he is preening.
I don't have to work until 4 today so I can keep an eye on him all day.

It might be that he felt better and ate far too much seed?
I hope that was it anyway. I doubt it's anything to do with you. x

Thanks Marianne.
The vet hasn't called back yet but I expect he will at the end of the day. That's what he usually does.
Criswell has been fairly bright today. I've been trying to keep him as quiet as possible but he doesn't want to be on his own and really calls for me to come back every time I leave the room. He's been doing lots of preening and scratching and a fair amount of chirping and he's been out of his cage for a little while 3 times. He also had a nap on one leg so I hope that means he's feeling a bit better.

Thanks for asking Marianne and Hezz. The vet didn't phone back but I'll call today to see if he left a message for me. I need to know how many days to give the metronidazole this time. If he hasn't left a message and doesn't phone today I guess I'll have to make an appointment and take Criswell back to see him next week.
Criswell is doing well. He didn't eat the most yesterday morning but started to eat more during the day. He's been quite playful too. He was an absolute horror to catch for his medicine last night.
He's just eaten breakfast with enthusiasm. I keep watching him eat to make sure he isn't just picking up seeds and dropping them again. His poops are back to normal. On the day he was sick they had gone a bit wrong again. He is now chirping away to one of his toys.

Glad to hear he's chirpy.
The only way to know if hes eating enough is to weigh him. Perhaps the vet can do this each time you visit? I do it once a week with all nine.

Thanks for that tip, Marianne. At the moment I don't think Criswell will be too cooperative about being weighed but I guess the best time to do it would be when we already have hold of him for his meds.
I'll definitely make that part of our routine in future.
