This morning I woke up to find Rio standing on one leg and the other limply hanging next to him. He tried to pull it up but couldn't lift his foot to the perch. I touched the leg and he didn't seem to have any feeling. He couldn't put any weight on it, and it just hung there, making him unable to walk.
In the time it took my ride to the vet to get here (15 mins), Rio made a full recovery, running, jumping and flying. We made the decision not to stress him out by a vet visit since he was extremely happy and walking about. We've been monitoring him and luckily the symptoms have not returned.
Has this ever happened to anyone? Should I be worried? What should my course of action be?
It was very scary seeing him in the state that I did this morning, however with the way he's jumping around now, you'd never guess what happened.

Gosh how scary, I can't help sorry, but sympathise with you. Funny how they get better just as you go to the vets, like us going to the doctor, you are better before you get there.

Could he possibly have dislocated it at the hip?

Do you think his leg could have fallen asleep? I have never seen it happen, but maybe it could.

I was terrified. I wonder if he could have popped it back in? If it was a dislocation, he fixed it on his own because all of a sudden he was chirpy and jumping around. I wonder if budgies can have limbs fall asleep? Even if that's the case, wouldn't that imply his blood flow was somehow interrupted... that would worry me.

Update: This morning I didn't realize anything odd with his leg. The vet said they could see him later in the day but I don't have a travel cage. I ordered one yesterday and it will be here in the mail in a week. Then I can take him to see her.
He hasn't been real chirpy today but yesterday he was off the charts, so maybe he's just tired. I can still make the effort to take him in his cage although its large and I worry about him hurting himself during the car ride. I guess, based on what I've been able to provide, do you think he can wait until next week to see the vet? I'm really shaken up about what happened yesterday.

A bit of a long shot but if you are worried and live anywhere near me (essex/suffolk) I have a small cage you can borrow... Fingers crossed he is ok though. Sometimes it would be nice to speak and understand budgieish hey?!

So sweet of you to offer, but I'm in Canada I just hope that by waiting a week, if anything is wrong, it doesn't get worse. If anything changes before then though, I'll take him in his cage anyways. That's a language I would like to learn haha!

Sounds like whatever happened may have healed itself. I agree, keep an eye on him and if anything changes, contact the vet. Otherwise a week should be okay. Keep us posted.

I did post on this thread yesterday, rio, but must have had a senior's moment and not hit "reply". But it sounds like Rio is recovering anyway. Their skinny little stick-legs certainly can be a cause for concern. Hopefully Rio simply tweaked it somehow and it is coming good on its own.
