Poor Gene's treatment has been changed no less than 4 times in the past 4 months since I've had him. :, (

Eye bunged up again this morning, he scratches it with his toes. Gently wiped with warm water. I've been and bought the golden eye ointment in my lunch hour. Does anyone know how to administer it and how often?

Just squeeze a bit onto the eye. I'd do it twice a day, morning and night.

Sorry to be reading this, clt80. I agree with SQ that it would be worthwhile having your vet consider that Gene's problem be fungal. I have read also that fungal infections of the eye are usually related to ill health of the bird, generally. I am sorry I don't have any quick fix wonder solution for you and poor little Gene. For bathing his eye, have you tried a warm wet tea bag used as a compress? Or a warm saline solution?

I have read about using cold black tea, or tea bags but i have not tried this. I put goldeneye ointment on last night but left him this morning as he is so scared, i just wanted to give him a morning off from being poked. I've had him out his cage crawling on me when i came home from work, I got his seed pot and he ate some seed, and i've seen him sip his water.
I emailed Barry Budgerigar's yesterday to see if he had any advice, he thinks it is a chronic respiratory problem and I should use Tylan - this is what I am currently using for Gene as it was the last medication I got from the vet for him. I have reordered some more from my vet this morning to pick up later in the week.

From what I can see you bought the ointment. Having recently had a bad eye myself, I started with the ointment, but it didn't work effectively and it gunked up my eye - like putting vaseline in my eye. I changed to golden eye drops - did the trip in two applications. Of course, I'm human, but if they have the same effect, I'd definitely opt for the drops. Hope the wee guy's eyes improve soon. All the best.

Hi - well funnily enough he is doing quite well. The ointment was worth a shot but didn't really do any benefit, in fact all the eye drops / gels / creams for Gene's eyes none of them have really helped. So we took to getting a cotton bud and using tepid water to bathe his eyes. His left eye has always been his better eye and this is now looking like a normal budgie eye, the feathers are even starting to grow back around it - not perfectly but still better than it was. The right eye is a lot better, by cleaning it with warm it removes the gunk and it doesn't seem half as watery anymore. Plus Gene isn't getting scared anymore thinking we are going to be putting drops in his eyes poor little button. So this eye does still get a bit of gunk, and we clean it as best we can and so far so good although it is still 'bald' around it.

Thanks Marianne.
Yes I will get a picture tonight or in morning (I have trouble uploading them onto this site - takes me a while). He is such a little trooper and he is always happy even though his health has always troubled him from such a young age.
