I've realized lately how most of my day to day cosmetics contain zinc of some kind. I'm by far not an expert and am unaware if and how the state of the zinc affects its toxicity. But, as my bonding with Rio gets better everyday, I am worried now that he likes to preen my hair.
Head and shoulders shampoo contains an active ingredient called W/W zinc pyrithione and lists zinc carbonate as an ingredient. My day cream lists zinc gluconate as well. I wonder how many of my cosmetics contain these ingredients.
I was hoping for some opinons/thoughts/experiences as to how our cosmetics that contain some form of zinc can affect our lives with our budgies.

I would imagine with cosmetics there will not be a problem unless the bird is eating the creams/lipsticks etc straight from the tub, and lots of it. Zinc poisoning usual comes from cage bars or aviary mesh that has been galvanised with zinc coating, and they bite off little bits ofcoating (metal) and swallow it. I would imagine the amount used in your products is fairly miniscule compared with zinc flakes that a bird could pull off bars etc.

Wow great link SQ, thanks a lot! I haven't seen zinc oxide listed on any of my cosmetics however, like I said I'm not an expert so I wonder if they're all the same chemical with different names. Just to be clear though, I don't let him preen when there's any leave in product in my hair and I don't encourage nipping at my face Thank you budgieretreat, I appreciate your thoughts. I also believed that most of the danger of zinc comes from the metal used in toys/cages. Rio has no access to my washroom where my cosmetics are stored. I think eating face cream would give anyone an upset tummy, zinc or no zinc I did the magnet test on everything Rio has and found all the toy bells magnetic. However, all my toys come from different companies and most state that it is zinc and lead free with non toxic finishing so I wonder if bells are made from a specific metal? His cage was also magentic but Prevue Hendryx swears non toxic materials and finishing.

Bells tend to be stainless steel the majority of the time, but note that amongst other "ingredients", stainless steel contains chromium which is also toxic, however do not fret, as it is only really dangerous when heated to melting point as it becomes carcinogenic. 316 Stainless is what is used in implants/surgical procedures and piercings as it is the purest and least dangerous. Stainless, is by far the safest metal for toys and cages. Cages are 99% of the time carbon steel (or mild steel) that has either been powder coated (typical of today) zinc, nickel or chromium plated (shiny) typical of the past. Carbon steel cages are much cheaper than stainless cages, but you have less to worry about with stainless.

Budgies Retreat In my experience bells are not mostly stainless steel. They are made of cheap stuff. A few years ago I ordered 15 stainless steel bells for my buds and chucked away the cheap ones that come with toys. Cost a fortune because at that time I could only find them in Canada. But worth it!

Every bell in my flights are stainless, all bought from internet or the local pet shops. Even the clangers inside the bells are stainless.

Could the both of you give me links to where you bought the bells? Thank you Sarah, for your suggestion, but since I'm in Canada I think the website where Marianne got her bells may be closer to me for shipping!
So I should assume that the bells that are magnetized are not a safe metal, right? Rio's a metal chewer and he likes to stick his face in and bite the clangers... It's hard to know even when the companies advertise 100% non toxic.

It the bells are not labelled as stainless steel, rio13, then you can be assured that they are NOT!!! Almost all toys that you can buy with a bell attached ...... these bells are not stainless steel. As Marianne has said the stainless bells cost quite a lot but you have them forever. I bought the first of mine about 10 years ago and I can't tell the difference between these ones and the ones I bought only about 18 months ago. They look as good now as the day I bought them. Sometimes the clappers, or the link between clapper and bell will not be S/S, but a good company will tell you that the bell and clappers are s/s.

Hi rio13It was a few years ago now, but I thought it was from: www.thingsforwings.caHowever, having looked on their site they don't seem to have the normal stainless steel bells only huge ones Sorry.

I'll look at both those sites, thank you!
And yes SQ, I love their website but unfortunately I've tried and they don't ship internationally.
