Oh, heavens, Sam. I am so terribly sorry. I honestly thought he was over the worst, poor little man. Alfie was so much the larrikin of the flock, I think he earned a place in most of our hearts. I know you will treasure his memories; the other boys will be wondering why their lives are so quiet. Rest in Peace, sweet Alfie. xxxxx

Thank you all for your kind messages I thought he was doing so well myself and often ask myself was it taking him back to the vets for a second time that brought it all on? I did try and say to the vet the first time he was diagnosed with Tricho can I not just come and collect the 2nd course of meds without an assessment to which they said no they would like to see him. Perhaps I should have insisted? He will always be in my heart and fondly remembered x

samwiseg I really don't think it was anything to do with taking him back to the vet a 2nd time. Sometimes they are just not strong enough to fight an illness. Very sad, but it happens. I know it's hard not to find ways to blame yourself (been there many times myself) but don't, it's really not worth the pain.

I know you're right Marianne Marlow and nothing I can say or do will change the situation and bring him back. This is actually how I feel: "I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend." (Shawshank Redemption)

Am so sorry for your loss samwiseg. You couldn't have done any more for your lovely Alfie, he had the best of everything and all care and love you could give him right up to the end. Don't think of 'ifs' and 'buts' you did everything possible. Fly high dear little Alfie.

It's so difficult.
I'm sory.
He's surely in heaven now, perching on wings of angels waiting for you. For you it will be years and years, but in heaven time goes by faster, for him it will be just days.

You wouldn't be a good person if you didn't try to think of how you might have done things differently, that might have worked out better. But Marianne Marlow is so right, sometimes what has grabbed them is just too strong, and I totally agree that the vet visit wasn't the deciding factor. Alfie fought, long and hard, but unfortunately this was one fight he just couldn't win. Hugs to you, Sam; you really did your best to help him through this. xxx

So so sorry You did your best so don't blame yourself... I lost my little Sidly to tricho despite my best efforts - sometimes it's just not enough. I still find myself thinking I could have done things differently and perhaps he'd still be here - it's hard.

Oh no, I have just come home to this news, I thought Alfie would make it, I truly did. I don't really have the words for you to express how shocked I am, but with all the good will, help and medicine in the world we sometimes just can't keep them here with us. So sorry Sam...

Thank you all so much for your kind words, I felt we had won the battle but in the end he just wasn't strong enough to make it. I still feel that there was something I could have done for the poor wee fella but I hope he knew I tried.

of course he did, and you did everything you could. It is normal to feel how you do, we all would, what if, and if I had done this or tried that.. but you did all that and he knew how much you loved him.

I remember when I first started keeping budgies...had about eight if my memory serves me correctly. Anyway, something was making them unwell and even with vet visits I couldn't get to the bottom of it. Near to where we live was a man that bread budgies..given his details by a pet shop. He asked us round to his place to see if we could get some answers. After we explained what was happening he said to us, and to this day I will always remember his words, he said, "if they were my birds I would knock them on their heads and start again". My OH said, that's a bit extreme...we made our excuses and left. Words that stay with me always and when I now have a sick budgie and fight to keep them alive, even if I don't succeed, I always think of the ones that got "knocked on the head" because their owner couldn't be bothered to put in the time and effort to cure them. In the end we did find the cause, it was the wood chippings we used on the cage floor...the pine fumes were making them unwell...back then we were just learning but at least we tried.x
