Hello all, pickle is fine, the op went really well and they managed to get all the lump off in one go, sadly he now has no preen gland, the tumour was attached to it, we will have to make sure he bathes every day, for now he has to stay in his cage for a week! That will be interesting! He has one stitch and a blob of glue. He has to go back next week for a check up but hopefully if he doesn't pick at it he should heal well. He seems OK in himself, a bit subdued but he has been and investigated all his toys and eaten and drunk. We just have to hope the tumour sample comes back clear of cancer. Just wondered if anyone has any info on any bird without a preen gland and how they get on. Thanks again for all your support and good wishes. Helen & pickle xx

helenmat, the vets must have had an avian specialist to do all this! Would you mind telling where you took Pickle? "Just in case." Sorry if you have already done so on an earlier page.

BB. Yes with pleasure, I have only found them after searching, its the only one I could find that carries the Avian Board Stamp
Ark Veterinary Surgery 187 Sheffield Road Killamarsh S21 1DY 0114 2470828
They have a website if you want to check there qualifications etc
There are two vets that specialise in exotics the avian vet we saw is called Richard, they are not cheap, £35 for first consult, the operation cost around £260 which includes a follow on check up in a week. you are paying for many years of specialist training and experience. I would recommend them. All the staff are lovely.

Thanks, helenmat - a long way from my home. How far did you have to travel yourself to get there?

Pickle is fine, picking him up at 5pm, I rang them I couldn't stand it anymore, they apologised for not ringing!!! Why is it that even with all the technology we have at our fingertips these days, there is still a basic failure in people communicating when they say they will.

Helen, after Smudge's op, she didn't have a preening gland either, sorry, I thought that was in the info I gave you.
Did the vet not give you advice on what Pickle needs? Maybe you can ask him that next week when he goes back for his checkup. As I didn't have an avian vet to help me, my info might not be the best.
I was advised by Barrie to give her calcium 3 x a fortnight but that I really would check with the vet - calcium can be toxic to budgies - I gave her as much sun as possible, and you might notice a slightly musty smell about him at times. Smudge never bathed before her op, but would after, and when I noticed her smell I would give her the opportunity, if I hadn't done so recently. I think she knew when she was "dirty". The preening gland oil helps them convert the UVB rays into Vit D which they absorb when they preen themselves, and this is important in the uptake of calcium into their bodies.

Pickle is ok this morning, he is just making me feel really guilty because he is sat at his cage door asking to come out, I don't know how I am going to change his food, its in a dish on the bottom of the cage, he has never eaten from a hopper!
BB, Hi yes, I am in Sheffield so only had about half an hour to travel which was fantastic.
BD, I got the wrong end of the stick, the vet said he would ring if there was a problem in surgery!! I was too worried I think!! He is an English Budgie, a cinnamon green, he is big though even for his breed, we got him for a Budgerigar Registered Breeder in Sheffield called Neil Porter, he has won several prizes with his birds, he was 7 weeks old and had been handled from being born. When Neil saw a picture of him some weeks later he said he wanted him back as he would have made an excellent show bird!!
Hess, sorry I haven't read the whole thing (naughty me) I will though. The vet has told us to spray him or bathe him every other day if we can but he didn't mention anything about calcium, I will ask next week. Difficult to get any sun here at the moment, its getting very wintery. I was wondering if there is a powder vitamin that I could give him on his food or something.
