Sky flew over to me and I thought she had something hanging out of her beak but it turns out the tip bit of her beak has split?? She is still managing to bite me well (!) and is preening.. but what on earth should I do?! Will it grow back if it comes off? I've tried to take some photos but not sure how well it's come out... will upload some in a moment. Advice welcome! *worried*

Ummmmmm, this is very odd.. she came up to me wanting me to rub her beak/face with my nose and the bit that I thought had cracked came off.. and underneath it is just her beak, and now she looks fine... what??? *confused* Do their beaks 'shed'??!

Yes sometimes little layers come off. But are you sure that she did not have sweetcorn recently?

No it was definitely beak! She doesn't like sweetcorn lol! She's perfectly fine now, how strange.. I never knew little bits could come off, it scared the life out of me!

Unless I'm mistaken they grow rather like fingernails. We won't normally see the bits come off as they are on the cage floor or somewhere. I don't think there is need for worry if it was only the tip. If you look closely you will see the layers of keratin at or near the tip.

Glad she is ok. That was quite a big bit of beak that came off wasn't it?!

Yes it was like nail but very thin so must've been an 'old bit' coming off, her beak looks fine now. I thought that was me & Sky off to the exotic vet next week but thankfully not! Phew!!

I am glad it was only a false alarm, Becca. And yes, beaks can flake, just like our nails can, particularly if we are don't something rough, or using things that might dry them out. You could smear a tiny bit of olive oil onto her beak just to keep it from drying out too much. Shallow bowls of water in the room will also help to keep the humidity up and help stop her beak from drying out, as well.
