Beautiful, Sam. I would love to have a drawing done of my birdies, but explaining away the expense would be rather hard. I will just have to make do with admiring from afar.

Was looking for this to show you ninz1 if you are first starting out with Faber C's then this may help to practise your blending: Draw a perfect circle and then start by colouring just a section of the circle with your chose colour and then use a darker shade. Use lightly and build up and even criss cross to get the colour blending. This is what I practised before I did Neytiri as I wanted that bluey-greenish hue that looked almost luminous: If you need more to see how it is done there are tutorials on youtube that can show you further Oh, and I finished the budgie one I was on about (this one is for Hezz re the sleeping budgie) Lovely

Oh 'eck! LOL! Just had a look on Google and (apparently) Polychromos is a specific brand of Coloured Pencils made by Faber Castell. The word Polychromos actually means "many colours" (which I thought is rather disappointing thinking it would mean something technical) but these are probably one of the best brands of coloured pencil to buy. What is great about them is you can blend with them too ninz1 and use them soft or hard. If you want to use Graphite Pencils, I would recommend Derwent - I have a set from F to 9B which are fab. And the biggest tip I can offer is get yourself the most decent pencil sharpener you can afford. I did not realise how much a difference it would make! I have one that is a Derwent one (really affordable too) see here: Thank you for your kind comments about my art - like you am self taught and have trawled through the net for hints and tips the further I have progressed. As for the paper, I personally use for colour and the greatest detail a very fine white smooth style of paper. However, if I am using graphite then I like to use something that has a bit of texture to it such as Daler Rowney as you can get a lot of texture and smudging like this: Sorry, I feel like I have gone on for a bit! This is just in my experience of course but I hope that has helped? Thank you for your brilliant tips Samwiseg! That parrot drawing is amazing!!!! I cannot believe you are self-taught. You are incredibly talented. I hope you never give this up and I cannot wait to see more of your art work. I have never really thought of doing pencil drawings but it looks really good.

When I was at college we were shown how to sharpen pencils with a scalpel, no pencil sharpeners allowed, they rip the wood which in turn damages the lead, I still use a knife now, many years (cough) later! I agree! My art teacher would use a pen-knife to trim the tips. The pencils looked a funny shape but at least you didn't lose most of the lead. A tip for all, do not use electrical sharpeners for expensive colour pencils as they sharpen through the lead so you lose out on it.

Oh you are very talented, I know I keep saying it but it's true! I wish I could do that! Thank you for the tip, it's so clever how you work out what colours to use. You know, it's funny I am saying this as people will ask me, how do you know this colour would look better etc and I would say "I am not sure, it's just instinct or just from experience". Now I am asking the same thing!!! Thank you for the tips, it's very kind of you to share your advice. I am going to try the circles and see if I can do it. The budgie one is probs my favourite but I am being bias.... we all love budgies here!

Well Samwiseg, whenever you feel like it, please do post your artwork. It inspires me to do better! I am planning on my budgie painting. Huckleberry never takes the right pose, silly budgie. His photos always end up blurry.

I hope ninz doesnt mind me adding this. I made this last night for my babies nursery. I am going to do 2 more similar but one with a blue heart in the middle of the chest and another with a pink heart. Then hang the 3 in a row. I used metallic silver pen, a dark grey felt liner and a black fineliner. I also used little glitter dot stickers for the border. It was so relaxing to do and made me want to do a whole lot more with budgies, parrots and other animals. I forgot how much I loved drawing. I am knitting some blankets just now too!
