Hi, I happened to stumble upon this site and am hoping to get some peace of mind and by the look of it some sound advice. I have 4 budgies and have had them for a couple of years, one of them Poppy started twitching her tail more than normal and clicking her beak. After 24hours it was still happening so I took her to see an avian vet who believes she has a respiratory problem and prescribed her with Baytril which I am giving her every 12 hours - 0.1ml. I am even setting my alarm to ensure she has it regularly. I have isolated her in a cage of her own as instructed by the vet and she has been taking the Baytril now for 5 days. She is trying to help herself breathe easier by hanging upside down on the sides of her cage and keeping her beak open on the bars which must be awful for her and quite upsetting for me as I don't know how to help her. I am considering taking her back to the vet tomorrow as I would have thought she would have bounced back by now and I could never forgive myself if anything happened. I must admit she does seem slightly better, not much, but definitely not 100%. Her poop seems normal and she is eating and drinking. Could anyone help at all. Many thanks, Ellie.

While we are not vets and would never seek to undermine a vet's diagnosis, there seems to me to be something not right about this to me as well. I agree that after five days on Baytril Poppy should be showing signs of improvemnt IF the baytril is targeting the correct organism(s). While baytril can be useful, unfortunately it has been over-prescribed by vets particularly for birds.
Something that other members have had success with with their budgies and respiratory infections is to give them steam treatments ..... my mind has gone blank at the moment, but along the lines of using a nebuliser, even steaming up the bathroom and keeping the hot water running to produce a steamy environment, you can add a little F10 if you have it.
The good news is that she is eating and drinking properly and her poops are good. I am sorry I am not able to look into this more for you - I have no internet connection at home and must now run.
For what it is worth, I would go back to the vet, even get a second opinion. Poppy might have a respiratory infection that is not bacterial, or her problem might be something else altogether. Good luck; I hope your little girl is better very soon.

Thank you so much for the great advice. My gut feeling is to take her back to the vet today which I shall do. I shall keep you posted on her progress

Hi there
You didn't mention if this was an avian vet or not. It really needs to be an avian vet, or the most you will usually get is baytril, no matter what is wrong with your bird.
EDIT: you did mention that it was an avian vet, I just missed it, sorry.

Re steam treatments, my experience may be helpful. When my Brodie had a sinus infection he had what we dubbed sauna sessions. The vet suggested getting a bowl of boiling water placed right by the cage (obviously with the bird safely locked in!) & covering the entire cage & bowl with a large towel, tucking it around the cage & bowl to form an enclosed space. The vet advised putting a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the water too. I did it very regularly, ie 15-30 mins 3 times a day & did it for several weeks as the vet said these things can take a while to shift so to keep on doing it even after he improved. To begin with I started with shorter sessions but very quickly Brodie loved them even reproaching me when I uncovered him!

Thanks, starrymist. I was having all sorts of problems trying to think of who and how, and didn't have time to go back through the threads. I wouldn't have included the eucalyptus oil; I didn't realise Brodie had had that added; I would have considered it a bit too strong for their systems, but there you go. I will (try to) remember that for anytime in the future. In that case I guess you could also use a small blob of Vicks ..... works the same way.

I know! It seems strong. She advised 1/2 teaspoon but we worked up to that dosage slowly
