Kian Allen from Cornwall, aged 5 (nearly six)
Q. When did you first start to become interested in budgie and what sparked it off?
A. My Daddy asked me what hobby I would like to do with him. I said I would like to breed budgies and have my own shed like him (he breeds pet types in all colours and crested) then I said I would like to show my budgies but my daddy said I needed different budgies than pet types. He said I could have exhibition budgies if I kept interested and looked after the pet types he gave me first. After about eight months he went and bought me some show budgies (and took his pet ones back!)
Q. What did your first aviary / breeding room look like?
A. I have a 7 foot by 6 foot shed with eight double breeding cages and a small inside aviary.
Q. Where and when did you acquire your first budgerigar?
A. I had pet types from my daddy and my first exhibition budgies came from Barry Mills in Plymouth
Q. Do you still have birds from this bloodline?
A. Yes
Q. Which bloodlines having given you the must impact on your stud?
A. Mark Gulley, out of seven pairs I have currently in cages five have some type of Mark's influence
Q. Do you have a Specific Way of preparing your birds for the breeding season?
A. Nothing specific, just when they are fit ready to breed they get paired up.
Q. Do you pair your birds by visual appearance / bloodline or both?
A. Visual appearance at the moment.
Q. How many chick and clutches are your birds Allowed?
A. Daddy says when we start breeding them we must not breed too many from them especially the hens as it will be bad for them. However it does depend on numbers in previous rounds and how well the adults look and act.
Q. What differences are there in your feeding programme in the breeding and non-breeding?
A. I currently use more softfood during the breeding season but learning quickly about feeding regimes etc so this will change rapidly over the next few months
Q. What Would you change about your setup if you had the chance (and infinite money to do?
A. A new birdroom based around the ones we have visited so far, larger flight inside and out. Bigger cages and a food preparation area and more storage space.
Q. Do you believe in preventatives medication? If so what do you use?
A. Cider vinegar once a week in the water . Every six months the birds are treated with a spot on Ivermectin based product.
Q. How do you deal with birds with feather disorders?
A. Will let you know when we get one!
Q. Do you have a favorite mutation or Variety?
A. Daddy says its about the bird first (although I know he likes normal greens!) but I like Lutino's
Q. Who do you admire most in the hobby?
A. (Kians answer from his own little lips) Mark Gulley because he has given me budgies and been kind to me.
Q. What was the best bird you ever breed?
A. Out of the five I have bred so far there is a very nice green pied bred from a Mark Gulley hen and a Barry Mills cock. Still very young but looks good so far.
Q. What was the best bird you have seen from Someone Else's stud?
A. Kian couldn’t answer this one
Q. What do you enjoy must about the hobby? Are you still as enthusiastic as when you first started?
A. Kian enjoys the shows and the way he has been treated by people in the fancy. He is still as keen as he was when he started (even asked for more show cages and more budgies for Christmas!)
Thank you Kian for taking part and I wish you all the very best in this wonderful hobby
