Bubba died this morning. I woke up to him looking hunched, and uninterested. He did eat, and drink. But I decided to make a vet appointment just in case. Had to search around a bit for an avian vet available today. Eventually found one and made an appointment. Mum suggested I get bubba out and hold and stroke him, as he likes that and it would comfort him. I did, for quite a long time, but I could feel him slipping away, he was losing his ability to grip.. I'll spare you the details, but he eventually slipped away in my lap, with me stroking him. I'm such a mess right now. I don't know what to do.. I'm just devastated.. I may have only had him a short time but it felt like forever.. R.I.P my dear sweet Bubba.

I am so sorry. What a terrible experience for you. Many years ago, I too once had a young bud for just a short time & though your time together was brief, it's no less upsetting. Fly high little Bubba.

I am so sorry, Ini. Sometimes these things happen. Sometimes they can't survive the transition. This little bird had a very hard start to life .... I have to say I wasn't happy with his look from the photos you showed in other threads, but dismissed my misgivings as nonsense. I can only say again, I am so sorry.

I have to say.. I wish concerns had been voiced a little more than they were.. I would probably have taken him in yesterday if that had happened.. I have a question, as this is the first budgie death I have actually witnessed, do they normally spasm, or is that a sign of something that causes the death. In his final moments, Bubba had quite a few spasms...

I am so, so sorry Ini. Please use the vet appointment to get some answers as to the reason for his death. You have to consider that it could be something contagious and Bud may have caught it as I know you had to keep them in the same room.

I'm going to ask for an autopsy, or whatever the proper name for it is.

In his final moments, Bubba had quite a few spasms... ini its very difficult to make a judgement with a picture, i didn't see the pics until the eve which is why i suggested the GA or Avipro to see him through the night, it could well have been stress and we would have panicked you unnecessarily. If he had been the same today i would have made the vet suggestion which you had already realised yourself. When i take in or buy a new bud the first thing i wait for is for them to poop, if the poop is normal i go from there before deciding to bring them home but even with this you can never be sure. I would certainly contact the person you got him from.

Thank you for the explanation. We've already done that. He was very shocked. He says it sounds like Bubba was very panicky and stressed from what we've described. He didn't believe there had been any signs Bubba was ill. I was actually in contact with him yesterday too, and he told me to check the poo, so it would appear Bubba's doings were normal till he came here.

We called our usual vets. They've suggested we call back on Monday to discuss things with the avian vet so that's what we'll do. We'll discuss the circumstances of death and of the build up, and decide whether we need a post mortem or not.

This is awful news, I am so sorry. I must admit I did not pick anything up, he was small but then he was quite young, they're all small.
Perhaps some advice for the future if you decide to take another bird, get him at 3 months old rather than 8 weeks? Then he'll be more used to eating etc and be stronger.
I'm pretty sure that this is just one of those things that could not be avoided, it must be hard for a young bird to be taken from it's siblings and put somewhere new.
In answer to the question about spasms. I, unfortunately have seen many budgies pass away and they usually (not always) go into what I call the "death flap", I'm guessing it's one last surge of adrenaline before they pass away.
I'm sorry if that is too much information, I'll delete it if you ask.

Honestly, after seeing it first hand, from the very beginning right to the end, I don't think it's possible for you to give too much information. I was with him, holding and comforting him, right from when he started being huddled, through to when he passed away. You've put my mind at rest a little, I was worried the death throws belied something else.
