Okay so I have a rather simple question; will my big English male fit in the best box and does it matter?
I've seen my hen popping her head out of the nest box hole and being fed by my much larger English boy. This may seem like a silly question, but will he actually fit in the nest box hole? He seems a bit big for it, but I don't want to disturb my hen especially as she's been in her nest a lot lately, and almost all day today. I checked for eggs while she was out and there's none yet, but I know both parents incubate eggs.
Will it matter if he can't get in? He sits on the perch and looks inside, feeds her and just generally 'guards' the nest, even when she's inside. Will she solely incubate eggs if her partner feeds her from outside the nest? She hops out here and there to stretch and run around, she's also been making her nest with the oats I put in there for her. I'm probably just over worried, but it's my first time breeding and I'm trying to do everything to help them along.

It is quite unusual for a male to incubate the eggs. He will feed her at the hole but the Hen usually does all the sitting, some wont even let the male in. I shouldn't worry too much

Thank you, skysmum, for confirming what I thought. Your advice is what I was getting around to making sure of.

Well, I answered my own question today! She lets him pop his head in to feed her but when he's done she scares him off haha she slept inside her nest box last night and so he decided to hop in with her, he seems a little more concerned than normal though, maybe it's because anytime he even tries to look in all you here is vicious quacking from the nest!

Generally they do not start incubating until the second egg.

Yeah, I know Hezz Every bird is different though, she's been back in the nest a lot so I'd say she's started incubating already. Haha nice pun Sam, I'm surprised my sister hasn't made any yet!

Oh, you're in Tasmania! I was wondering what the difference was between 'normal & English' budgies, now I see!

Haha She's doing pretty good so far, looks like her second egg is on the way! Caught them mating for the first time this morning lol hopefully some of her eggs will be fertile! And a normal budgie is a pet budgie, which are small. An English budgie is much bigger and is also known as a show budgie, as lots of people breed them specifically for that purpose. They were directly bred over there, hence the 'english', but they're pretty common throughout the world now Speaking of English budgies, I'm not really interested in breeding them for shows or anything and I only have the one, but I am looking forward to the 4th as I'm helping out at one of our local bird shows, should be fun

That sounds like an exciting day i hope you enjoy We have a summer country show near to me, been going since i was a child and they used to have a huge tent with Budgies, Finches, unusual Chickens, doves etc etc. I loved it but when the bird flu started it all had to stop, however i went back last summer and they had a small tent with just Finches, lovely to see again but i expect it will all stop once again in light of the new outbreak

Yep, will try to get some pictures when I'm not busy skysmum kinda reminds me of a local show we have, there's normally a baby animal section with chickens and lambs and stuff, but not often very many birds. I hope it lasts though! Also my hen laid her last egg around this time 2 days ago, she has egg bum and is in her nest box, I'm getting a bit worried about her. She's being fed etc and is incubating her other egg, should I be worried if she hasn't laid in another hour or so?
