identification of colour/type help

Our aim is to set up an indoor aviary of happy and healthy birds, not necessarily to be breeding, but we hope to have an even split of males and females, of "interesting colours genetically, and visually. Well....that's the plan!
I have tried to read up on the genetics side of things, but am getting really bogged down.... HELLLPPPPPP please?


So we collected this lovely little girl (am confident this is a female coming into/in breeding condition), and she has been fabulous. Supposedly one of last year's hatch (but don't know exactly when....no leg ring) , but lovely bird, hopping on/off finger within 24 hours of arriving with us, and happily free flying in the safety of our sitting room within 3 days, and relaxed enough to hop onto a finger to be put back in her house. Been called "Purdy Birdy".... question about her is, what colour/type is she? She is smaller and "neater" than two of the others, who look gigantic next to her!







then we  collected three young birds, and having read myself upside down regarding cere colour regarding sexing, and the colour/type lists in various places, and thinking I had everything straight in my head (its many years since I had two pet spudgies), I am now really confused as to what we have ended up buying and obviously, I need to know....and LEARN!

Soooooooo......Terrible photo, but this one is shy... can get better photos tomorrow ,leg ring/hatched Oct, huge in comparison to Purdy above!

Then the last one....only 11 weeks old....is "she" a Rainbow?

Hello and welcome. They are all beautiful budgies. I'm not sure on colour mutations, but feel sure the two bigger birds are exhibition types. They usually are on the larger size than the normally bred budgie. The little lady with a white spot on the back of the head I think is a 'pied' but again, I am not experienced enough to say which type! 'Clearwings' and 'Spangles' come to mind with me. They are all very pretty. Someone will soon be on here and able to help answer your question!

He really is a stunner lazydaisy, have you chosen names for them all yet or have I missed that bit?

Purdy Birdy is a yellow face cinnamon dominant pied cobalt female – probably about 6 months old.- very pretty

The other 3 are:
A light green spangle male – If the green is very bright he might be a violet light green spangle

A Sky blue spangle female,

And a sky blue yellow face opaline spangle female – quite young. The yellow is spreading and making the blue look greenish.

The first two spangles appear to have red leg rings which means they were born in 2014.- They are both show type

So, forgive my ignorance....but regarding the little 11 week old female....with the genetic mix that she has, does that class her as what is referred to as "rainbow"?

reading further presumably due to the spangle gene being present, and the clearwing/greywing gene absence, she couldn't be a true rainbow?

I am fairly sure she isn't a rainbow, but Nev will be able to confirm that.

Sorry, I missed this post yesterday. I would have given my uneducated opinion, as Nev has above, but possibly not have gotten the last, your young female, completely.

Looks very similar to a rainbow but to be a rainbow she would need to show the clearwing mutation instead of the spangle.

They are certainly very lovely and pretty. I recognised the spangles as I have one myself, but mine is a pet type.

I don't have Nev90's expert knowledge though

Names are starting to happen now. Obviously the first hen (yellow face cinnamon dominant pied cobalt) had already found her name, Purdy Birdy. The sky blue spangle show type female has become "Hedwig" after the white owl from Harry Potter, but also gets called "Walk" as she is really quite clumsy at this flying milarky. The gorgeous little clown, that is the sky blue yellow face opaline spangle female seems to have settled on the name "Opal". The big green spangle boy still needs a name, and the two new boys that we have just picked up, are so new, its too early to work anything out for yet. (We have probably made a big mistake....but we have told our 7 year old that she may find a name for one, so we could yet end up with a "Sparkle Fairydust" !!!)

I will have a couple more for you to look at when they have settled enough to take photos, as we have just picked up our last 2 boys. Both young and pet type, one green/yellow, one blue and white. But it is seeming from our choices so far in what we have ended up with, that we must quite like the spangle gene!!

Cheers. I have tonight, with help from a lovely gentleman from the budgerigar society, found out that the green spangle boy was bred in Essex, and the sky blue spangle girl, Hedwig, is a Welsh girl. This green boy, with his Essex accent, and swept back, luxurious hairdo, is now called Joey!
