We lucked out in buying a large vision cage 2nd hand last year & it came with a bunch of toys, plus my kids went nuts at the local big pet store a couple mths ago when they were clearing out their bird section. So needless to say I have a couple shopping bags full of toys, plus their cage has over 10 toys in it. They still play with them every day but I'm wondering how often would be a good rule of thumb to switch them out?

I change mine and move them around roughly every few weeks but don't overcrowd it as they need space too otherwise they might get lazy and fat! Seriously, they need space too!

Oh ya we tend to keep most of the toys towards the top of the cage & along the sides, there is loads of flying room in the middle & lower parts of the cage! I asked my girls if they wanted to switch up the toys in the birds cage & they got all excited going thru the spare toys. Now we are watching 4/5 jump from toy to toy. #5 is the poor inbred unhealthy guy who doesn't play with anything anyways.

Hope you don't think I was being a bit pushy, though I can be..... You know your birds and setup better than anyone of course and just because you're a new member doesn't mean you're new at budgie keeping! Having a good selection of toys is wonderful

Nope it's all good. except I feel guilty you change yours every couple weeks.... these guys have had the same toys & set up in the cage for over 6mths!!!! I haven't been around the forums much as I'm really busy with my family. I got back into budgies last year after having grown up with them. but in the 25years I'd not had them the "hobby" has changed so much!!! as a kid our birds were in a round metal cage, with the "pipe style" food & water dishes, sandpaper covered perches & they might have had a small glass mirror twist tied to the cage bars! After falling in love with 1 boy at the pet store last year I brought him home & then 2 mths later we got the girls & decided to upgrade to the large Vision cage. Then unfortunately a couple weeks after moving them into the bigger cage, the boy died (pneumonia) & we ended up taking in the 3 boys from my husband aunt who didn't want to care for them any more. all these swings, jungle gyms, hanging toys.... dish feeders, vitamins/clay cal suppliments.... & don't get me started on seed & feeding..... LOL how the birds survived when I was a kid is beyond me. My mom saw my bird's set up in a picture on fb & was shocked. in her opinion we could put twice as many birds in this cage & they'd still have more room than what she gave....

I change toys around the cage and play gym about every 2 months. I have one that's more wary, but the younger and "braver" brother that has helped the timid one open up a bit. I still leave things alone a little longer, otherwise I don't think much would get played with before they had to get used to a new setup and toys.

Mine get changed around every week, when they get washed, along with the cage, the perches and seed pots. I have about three changes worth of toys, but don't give them heaps at a time.
