That's good to know, tree to the bathroom it is then Yesterday when he was steping up and off i was through out the second session leaving him on my finger for longer and longer and he was in no hurry to fly off at all ..i put him on my shoulder and he sat for about 30secs then took off.. I took him to the bathroom today but i think he now knows that its meaning coming out of the comfort of his cage as when i was doing step up in his cage he was jumping off straight away and even with millet was not interested in staying on my finger! so i brought him back in to the living room and did cage step up and he stayed for ages like normal!? Ho hum

Well, then, maybe he is trying to tell you he doesn't need to be confined now. "I know what to do, so now lets move out of this little bathroom and back into the lounge." But he still needs to know you are at the top of the pecking order, and so you set the rules, not Elfie. Don't let him get away with dictating terms or you will never win, unless he allows it. Take the whole cage into the bathroom. That way he also learns about going back home when you decide it is time too. He is a smart little fella.

So continue with the bathroom training!?....i think that is a good idea as i got a feeling if i set him free in the lounge he would have none of the step up business and be cheeky and just fly to pillar and post haha....ok i shall persevere and get through this "nope not doing it mum" stage..... Thank you AGGGAAIIN Hezz, you are like a Budgie god mother ;D

You most certainly can! So am I. It is always wonderful to see progress being made. Keep up the bathroom routine for another week, or chose another smallish room - maybe a bedroom - and give that a week of repetition. I think by moving him around into different rooms you will keep him keen too - no time for boredom to set in. And he will become familiar with more parts of the house, so will know where the perchy places are, if he finds himself there in a panic. But there will be times when he just won't cooperate. If you have one, just stop, put him back (concede defeat this time)and try again in another hour or two. We all have times like that - when we just bl***y well don't want to do something. Birds are no different. Thanks for your kind words, Moogie. I am glad I can help. I enjoy it too, learning about your progression, and very satisfying knowing you will have a lovely feathered friend to share your time with. They are fabulous little things.

Well sadly my bedroom is the same size as the lounge (being in a flat) so will stick with the bathroom....He is doing great (once i have been able to get him out of the cage that is ha ha) although today i got him out near enough straight away....The only times he has flown of on to the blind is when i have placed him on my shoulder but as soon as i put my finger out and said up he was on it right away..I'm doing about 10Min's of step up then letting him just sit for a while on his tree as i talk to him and he just starts to grind his beak,he did that whilst on my finger today also which was very cute..x

All is going very well, from the sounds of it, then, and that is wonderful news. Keep trying with the shoulder sitting, though, once you feel he is ready for a bit more from the step-up training. You will find you will walk around all stiff, trying to keep your shoulder still, but just be natural, they hang on. Even to the extent of walking down your back when you bend forward to pick up something, and then back up your back as you straighten up. I am sure he will come round in due course with coming out of his cage. I am a bit surprised that he is still reluctant to come out............actually, is it a little door to the cage? They can feel vulnerable going in and out of a small door as it is confining for them......screams danger to them, no room to manoeuvre. If this is the case, I am sure he will come around and realise that he is in no danger in the doorway, after a while. Keep the updates coming, please.

Hey hezz...Still doing well he even lets me kiss his belly and run my nose over his cheeks ha ha doesn't like my shoulder yet but that will come in time i suppose!? Was wondering if it was time to bring him in to the lounge now and see how we do there? i know its hard to say when all budgies are different and you cant see for yourself but your input would be really good...Oh and he is trying carrot broccoli and spinach...Tried a mashed up boiled egg (not the whole thing of course) but he tried one bit and spat it back out on the floor, quite funny....

Sounds as though you two are doing really well. As far as the lounge is concerned, you won't know until you try. Just make sure you budgie-proof it before you attempt to get him out, and you have PLENTY of time, in case he decides that being out of the cage is cool and being in the cage is not! Is there somewhere you can put his java tree, so he has a familiar perching spot? On a table or bench? As long as it isn't down low eg coffee table would probably be too low. A stool works well. Give it a go, and don't be surprised if you feel you go backwards a bit, if he isn't too out of control, give him a couple of chances to settle down and show you how good he is. Once he is allowed around the rest of the house, he will probably take to your shoulder - it;s high enough for them to feel safe, and close to you, so good for bonding. Really good that he is eating his greens - just go easy on the spinach, it is a calcium binder which hinders the bird's ability to absorb calcium. It is so funny when they spit out something, isn;t it? Even though they can't wrinkle up their noses in disgust, they certainly can make their point known! Will wait for the next update, "Can Elfie handle the Lounge???"

Elfie CAN handle the lounge haha, got him out (and even that now is on the first attempt) i put the tree on top of his cage and did step ups ect he did a few laps of the room and is now sitting on his hanging perch opposite me and hes grinding his beak...Unfortunatly i think it will only be safe for him to come out in the lounge as i have no door to the kitchen and also my dog Ned would prob try and get him for lunch so when Elfie is out Ned is either with my better half on LONG walks or in his bed in the kitchen with his fav peanut butter treat (which takes him a good 2-3 hours to munch.......i will keep you posted and if there is any thing else you can think of let me know xxx

There you go! What a clever Elfie. As long as the two pets don't run into each other by mistake. It is lovely that you and Elfie have made such progress. Just keep up the training on a daily basis until it is routine for him. Keep up the good work.

It is very cute. Moogie, if anyone (that should be when, not if) come along later with training questions, starting from scratch, I am going to direct them to this thread. There are a number of things you have brought up, which new budgie owners often do. I think it can be of great help for others. Do you agree?
