Hi I have bred budgies in the past without any problems what so ever but recently I have bought a 14mth old male and a 12month old female they have bonded really well he is very attentive to her preening feeding her etc so i put a nest box in. They are fed seed, fresh fruit and veg they have a mineral block and cuttlefish which they love. The female paid a lot of attention to her nest box she went in and out all day arranging it how she like and kicked out the nesting material she didn't want in there and they started mating a lot after a week or so she laid her first egg then two days later she laid another one but after three days she threw one egg out then the other egg and has not gone near her nestbox since showing no interest in it. My question is why would she take so much time preparing her nestbox and allowing the male to mate with her if she wasn't ready or didn't want egg?

I know budgies can mate from 10 months old but maybe she is just too young still and immature to breed yet.
Maybe take the nest box away and try again next summer when she is a little older.

Thanks for the reply. She is over twelve months I know the owner I got her off he owns his own bird shop and recommended her for breeding. I think because this is her first time breeding she still maybe a little immature. I went to take the nest box out and discovered she has laid another egg in there so I will leave her alone and see what happens if she throws the next lot out I will take the nest box out and wait until next year, we only breed for our own purposes for family and friends who love budgies just as much as we do :-)

O.k so she has now laid 4 eggs and she hasn't left the nest box only to eat occasionally and to spread her wings, the male is in the box feeding her constantly (very doting dad to be) so fingers crossed all goes well.

I candled her eggs over the weekend as none have hatched as yet. I only checked 3 I didn't want to disturb her too much the first one was infertile so I took it out and the 2nd was fertile but looked small and the third was definitely fertile I could see the little chick moving around inside. I didn't check the rest I just wanted to make sure there was at least one fertile egg so the poor little thing wasn't wasting her time. I will leave her to it and when they hatch they will hatch I guess just taking a little bit longer. The first I had down was suppose to hatch on the 25th

Have any hatched yet?
I found with mine they were all different with regards to time from laid to hatched.

So the first one hatched friday morning then when I checked saturday lunch time 3 more had hatched so very close together and then the last one hatched on Sunday so the 5 hatched, Im a bit worried about the little one that hatched yesterday. The others babies especially the one that hatched Friday has grown already but the little one that hatched yesterday mum has pushed to one corner of the nest box and it is not in the concave part with the other 4. I initially thought it was dead but when I gently touched it it moved its head slightly I gently put it in the concave part with the others but when I check again a couple of hours later she has moved it out again. Im not sure if she is doing this so the others don't squash it or because she has rejected it but it is so little and weak. Can anyone give me advice on what to do or just let nature take its course?

It sounds like she has rejected it - it will not be fed or be able to stay warm where it is. There may be something wrong with it that only the hen can pick up on (this happens more than you think) but all you can do is to try hand feeding it, not an easy job, and not one I have done, especially with a chick, let alone one only a day or two old. Do you have anyone where you are who might give you some guidance? All I know is that the consistency has to be just right and the temperature has to be just right. Too many things to get wrong, but for this little one to have any chance, I think you do need to give it your best shot.

Thanks Hezz, on my way home last night I got a syringe and some formula to hand feed it ( i have hand raised one from four days old before but not one so young and he survived really well my mum and dad have him he is 5 now and can say 50 different phrases) but it was around the clock feeding Lucky it was summer and really warm. The good news is when I opened the nest box the little one was under mum with a full crop so she took the little one in they all seemed to have a full crop and mum and dad were both in feeding them all. They are doing a really good job as first time parents. Im not sure why the little one was to the other side of the nestbox I really was fearing the worst when I got home but over the moon when I saw it was o.k and a lot more lively and in the concave with siblings and mum and dad. They all looked content in their little well not so little family. So fingers crossed it stays that way. Also there is probably an answer to this question but when can I clean the nest box out and replace the nesting material?

Have all eggs hatched that you expect to?? If not, then definitely wait until all the eggs are hatched. Even if they are all out, with what you have gone through with this youngest one and mum, I personally would leave it a few days, just to make sure she is bonding with this baby, and will not reject it a second time with the changeover. We would love to see some photos when and if you can.

Yes she laid 7 eggs all up, 2 were infertile and the other 5 were fertile which all hatched. I thought the same I didn't want to disturb her too much until all the chicks were just a little bit older (cannot believe how fast they grow)but I am checking on Annabel (mum) and and her little ones a bit more frequently to make sure everything is o.k she doesn't seem to mind she gets out and has a big stretch a bit of a preen and then hops straight back in when I close the cage door. Poor Blue (dad) is run off his feet he is just a mess atm his face is green from silverbeet ha ha he just hoped out from feeding when I was putting the cover on them for the night I have posted a pic im not sure if it will load or not but I will try and get one with mum and her bubs at the end of the week.
