I’ve ordered the spot now too. That can do video calling and can have a clock face, so will have that in he bedroom I would have the spot but I can't see what's on the screen. I even bought a speaking clock before this Echo thing came along.

Yes you can easily just move it from room to room, just unplug it and plug it back in. I have two actually, one upstairs and one down.I know you said yours is the Google one helenmat, but can you listen in on the one upstairs to one downstairs. Like a baby minder? I don’t think so, although I have never tried. You can send messages through to the other unit though, for instance I could tell downstairs speaker to set an alarm from upstairs for a certain time and it will sound on the downstairs unit.

:-( I think it has a choice of 15 clock faces, so it might be ok? When I get mine, I can post photos to show you. But it will tell you the time if you ask and you can still have it set up to do alarms with stations on. the video part is not the only good feature, in fact might even be too small for me.' I will report back They featured one of these on This Morning yesterday, it looked very neat. Let us know how you get on, was it very expensive?

Ask Alexa to play "Forest Birds". Set a Sleep timer so she will stop after a while.

Can the dot play digital radio without a subscription of any kind?
The reason I ask, is that there is a digital station that I like to listen to, but my DAB wont pick it up,it's very frustrating. You can listen on the internet, but I don't have speakers.
Just wondered if the dot would do it?

It's choosing which one Shirls. There seem to be so many. Would appreciate any help on the best one to choose from members who already have one.

I have the dot in my bedroom. The Echo in my kitchen. The echo show in my lounge on the desk.
I use the dot to turn off my bedside light, to play some music and set a sleep timer. The sleep timer stops the music after a certain length of time. As I am leaving the bedroom I just say "Echo, start my day" The bedside light goes off the lounge light goes on and the computer screens go on.
The Echo in the kitchen is useful for timers when I'm cooking. I tuen the kitchen light on and off with it as well. Occasionally I have that playing music.
The show has a reminders to tell me when to take my medication and things. I also use that for timers if I put things in the oven and don't need to stand watching it. When I am going to bed I say "echo, good night", it says "goodnight. talk to you tomorrow.". It then switches all the lights off downstairs, turns off the computer monitors, my desk light. Then it turns on my bedside light. It plays music for the budgies when I go out.
I don't know if a subscription is needed for the music as I already have a Prime account.

I would say get the newest. But the home hub is handy if you are going into home automation as I have. When I started out there was no built in hub so I had to buy a separate one.Now I believe the new built in hub will interface with Samsung SmartThinngs as well as Google Home. It all depends on what you want it to do for you. They all do most of the things, but some do a little bit more. They all have had time to mature so to speak. None of them are difficult to set up. just plug and go. You will need a wi-fi network. That's it.

I don't know what the newest one is OP, there are new versions of the Echo, Dot, and Spot. I'm not bothered with the home hub thing, and I do have wi-fi.

Ah I see. Well they are still developing so the newest one is whatever the current model is. A quick Google will tell you that. As for the model The Dot which I have two of are the smallest, and therefore have the smallest speaker. Don't let that put you off as they can still make plenty of noise without distortion. I don't have a Spot so I can't tell you much about them. The Echo is the original and quite a bit taller than the others. The sound is quite good for such a small footprint. It doesn't knock over like you think it would and is quite stable. The Home Hub comes as standard with that model. The price has come down for all the models so it will not be a massive investment. If you just want to have a tinker I would suggest trying the Dot. It is cheap enough to use as door stop if you don't like it. I can almost guarantee you will not be using it as a doorstop.
