Thanks OP for all your help, really appreciate you taking the time to explain as I know nothing about them. It was my OH who said he would quite like one, it had never crossed my mind, but now after yours and others description of them, they look really good. Thanks again.

I also have wondered about them but after researching them me and OH thought we wouldn't use it enough to justify in purchasing one... ...now if I had an african grey...

OP Sorry to bombard you with questions. I'm now thinking of getting the dot to listen to digital radio with (specifically the talkradio station) How do I use it for that? a mention was made of tuneinradio app, so I have to connect it to a phone or something. Sorry for my ignorance.

They are a servant Shirls. Now if they would bring me a cup of coffee. I don't think an African grey and any voice operated system is a good idea. Although one can turn the microphone on and off when wanted. That is one reason they don't allow the system to operate any security system. Not because of parrots, but because in the early days criminals could shout through letter box and disarm the alarm system. Now I have an electronic door lock that links to the alexa voice system. You could imagine what would happen if someone could unlock the door by voice.

All I do is get settled in bed and say "echo, play Classic FM". I then say "echo, set sleep timer for 15 minutes" I have heard the music stop on about three occasions as I am asleep before that time. (atrb_partsz) zzz

Thanks OP. I think I'll get one for Christmas, it's cheaper than a new DAB radio, that I also might not be able to pick up the station from!

Sorry for my ignorance. You would pair it to your phone Marianne through Bluetooth, I imagine you could then play radio or music you have on your phone. Correct me anyone if I'm wrong because all this technology is new to me too 😁

Amazon have their own music channels and all the music played is free of charge. I thought there was a charge for music from Amazon OP, is it not just free if you are a prime member.

As for playing media from your phone/mobile device I don't think you can. The Bluetooth connection is meant for paring with speakers.
Amazon have their own music channels which are free to use. For things like Radio1 and others you will need to subscribe to Prime.

Sorry for my ignorance. I can now answer your question, which I wasn't sure of. There is links to apps that are used by alexa, and they are called skills. I just had a listen to the radio show you mentioned and the skill appeared in my list of skills. It wasn't there before. Now possibly because I have a Prime account it did it automatically. So if you don't want a prime account you would have get the app you mentioned on your phone. You would then have to link your alexa device with talkradio.app using a skill. It sounds complicated but believe me it isn't. It is free of charge to do that. You would then have your favourite radio station to listen to at any time.

I thought I would check that I was giving the correct information to you and anybody else Marianne. I could sort of read the importance to you in your post.

Thanks OP I like to listen to talking radio in the evening and I get fed up with LBC. TalkRadio has Iain Lee on from 10-1 on Weekdays and "the Unexplained with Howard Hughes" (not the recluse!) on Sundays and it's so frustrating to me that I can only listen to it on my mobile phone. So it'll make a huge difference to me!

Yes, @marianne & @op, you just need to 'enable' the skill (app equivalent) called TuneIn & it will play whatever radio station you want, no charge & completely separate from paying for Amazon music. I love my echo, it does so much for me being mostly confined to bed just now & has given me some independence. I can even put the living room light on for Brodie from bed - before I'd have to put light on at wall hours before it was dark or he'd be sat in dark until my parents arrived in the evening. It's amazing!
