I have a pair of budgies who have been together for 6 years. They have decided to breed all of a sudden. Can she have babies at thos age?

You should make sure they don't have any nest boxes. You definitely don't want them laying eggs.

I did handle the chicks I had, mainly to move them for cleaning the nestbox and to check them (legs, beak) and weighing them once they had fledged so I knew they were eating by themselves ok.
It's a bit different for me as I have an avairy and as soon as they go outside I lose the human-avian bond; not completely but it's not the same. They are not interested in me once they are out in the flock. Saying that it is useful to have them hand tamed if you ever need to give meds as they are not as scared of you.

I think so, as well. cal383, budgie hens of this age are really running health risks laying eggs, especially for the first time. What do you mean by "breeding" Has the hen laid eggs, or have you seen them mating? If mating, then, as Marianne has said, give them nothing that they might use as a nest box. It might also help to mix things around in their cage so that things are not in the same places, disturb their complacency a bit. If she has already laid eggs, get dummy eggs and replace the real ones with these, so that she might decide that she has enough for a clutch and stop laying altogether. If she is laying, you will need to watch for signs of calcium depletion and egg binding which can be fatal, especially in an older girl.

They have always been close and have had sex but since they moved into the window in a larger cage she has laid an egg, as no nest box she lay it high up and it smashed but has now laid another. I assume if i move them back into a corner and they have less light this will stop. Should I leave her the egg or not?

Leave the egg, move the cage back into a darker spot, mix the cage furniture around so that things are in different places and get some dummy eggs just in case she keeps laying.
