I'm not really very good at growing things because I don't know what I am doing! jellybean grows some of her seeds in a pot with some soil for her budgies to eat. So I am going to have a go and post photos here. Does anyone else grow anything for their budgies? I'd like to see photos

I hope your millet growing is a success Marianne, the buds will love it. Put it on a bright windowsill, but dont over water it. Look forward to your results. When you've grown something for your birdies that they enjoy, it makes you want to try other things. Mine like snowpeas, chickweed (which is a bit hit and miss) and wheatgrass, and of course the millet grass which is a definite favourite.

Thanks. I grew chickweed on my balcony before and my buds loved it. But I can't access the balcony anymore cos the buds are out all day.
How often do I water the seeds I'm growing?

I've got one of those spray bottles that you can use for misting the buds. In the warm weather I would water morning and night.

Nature does most of my growing for me, so I am lucky, but I have finally had success with sprouts. I gave up on the bird seeds for sprouting and went human-grade, with much better results. If the birds don't like them, I do. I haven't managed to entice the little birds to get too fond of them, but Loki gives them a nibble when I offer him some.

In the month of March 2014 I thought I would try and grow some millet from the seeds that were in the bottom of the plastic bag I brought the millet home in. As I had never done this sort of thing before I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing. Anyway I put some compost in a plant pot and put that on a glass dish, and simply dropped some seeds in the compost. I expected to water the growing grass quite sapringly and just put the water in the sucer. It needed watering every day. 7 days after planting I had this in the plant pot. Four days later I had this. I had forgot to water it for a few days. By now it was pot bound with roots coming out of the bottom. I did have another go with a few less seeds in and quit a few grew into what we know as millet. Not good enough for the buds. So on to the major attempt. I didn't have a saucer quite big enough so I put some gravel in the bottom, quite a lot actually. True to form 7 days after planting I had a nice growth. By the middle to end of July I had this growing. I know it looks lik any other grass growing, but a closer look revealed this. Now my eyes are not very good but even I can see something other than grass in there. Fast forward to the end of October and harvest time. I did reap more than what is seen there but some budgies kept eating it. Yes! they did eat it and enjoyed it. They also had a whale of a time long before harvest time. There is no special requirements or talents to grow millet, just patience. Dive in and have a go. I hope there isn't too many typos.

Amazing OP, and great to see the boy's enjoying it. Do you still grow it from time to time for your other birdies?

I haven't done for quite a while. But after going through all the pictures that I have I think I will start again. There's nothing like fresh. The hardest part was keeping the boys off it once they found it was there.
