Hello Everyone! I am new here and looking for advice regarding bar spacing. I am wanting to buy a bigger cage for my new budgie. The cage I have seen is the Imac Calla and the bar spacing is 15.37 mm. It says it is suitable for a cockatiel, would it also be okay for a budgie? Thank you in advance

Hi bud, I believe that the bar spacing for a budgie should be no more than 1.2cm, ideally 1cm whereas the Imac cage is 1.5cm so a bit wide for a budgie.

12mm max for a budgie, bud. I would not go with the wider spacing, sorry.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I thought the spacing seemed wide, but the pet shop told us anything up to 2mm would be okay for a budgie.
I think we will probably get a replacement tray for his cage for now and keep searching for something more suitable.

Well done on checking this out. Sometimes pet shops will say anything to get you to make a purchase.

There are plenty of people on here bud that can advise you on cages if you want. Cages of all shapes and sizes and there is a section of here about cages and avaries with various pics. I have a Ferplast Piano 6 from Zooplus.

Yes, I did mean 2cm . The pet shop weren't desperate to get me purchase the cage, as they still haven't got back to me with a price for it! It was one that they would have had to order in. Anyway, I won't be going back there after the poor advice.

Unfortunately, petshops often give poor advice, occasionally you'll find a good one but it's pretty rare!
I think all my cages have bar spacing of 1cm.

I have a Ferplast Piano 6 from Zooplus. Thank you. I have looked at the Ferplast Piano 5, but I couldn't see what the feeders were like from the images. How big are they and are they secure? We have currently have a Ferplast Rekord 4, which we have had a long time and Jasper has managed to escape through the feeders. One of the reasons I liked the Imac Calla, was how the bars dropped down behind the feeders, so I knew he would be safe. I know exactly what I want, but it doesn't seem to exist!

I'm very lucky that we do have a fantastic pet shop nearby, they are very knowledgeable and have given me excellent advice every time I have been in. As they were closed on Sunday and don't sell cages, I thought I would go elsewhere. I'm so glad I queried their advice on here. You've been really helpful, thanks

Good luck with you hunt for a great cage. Just be warned, though, that many a bird has escaped through slide-up doors. Clever little things, but a clothes peg is usually enough to stop a budgie.
