Lol!! They are all hens Colin, that's why I said it was a good weight for a Cockerel!! Not such a good weight for a hen. Sorry, I should have explained a bit clearer.

Sorry, not laughing about the sore throat or the vet visit. Chooks don't quite have the pocket-fitting dimensions that budgies do. Does their ... um .... bigness have anything to do with the feet problems you have had? It possibly doesn't help Hezz. But my garden is full of stones and I mean FULL of stones. Much as I try and remove them, they seem to multiply, and chickens do like to scratch back and they could easily cut a foot on a sharp stone.

As far as I know, Cockerels don't lay eggs

Ah ... so you think part of the problem is that they cut their foot on a stone, and this develops into the dreaded BF??? I wouldn't even have thought of that.

Oddly enough, a friend of mine is having the same problem. She has applied Gentian Violet to the bullied chook's reddened "parts" to reduce the redness which is what is being picked on.

They can be really quite nasty at times cant they? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised what with the pecking order an all

Aurelias bald patches aren't red, except where they have pecked near her comb and round her ears which is red flesh anyway. Her bald patch is white funnilly enough!! You can buy a spray which is blue for 'blood' wounds to stop the chickens pecking, they can actually kill another chook if blood is drawn.

Because I have had two trips to the vet I have had to take Aurelia out of her 'qurantine' cage because it isn't foxproof. So I can only put her in there when I am at home, basically I have to stay home for 3 or four days to allow her to regain her independence and stand up to the bullying. Also it wouldn't be faair to put her in there in this heat either, so I just have to keep a careful eye on the goings on while I am here.
