solid to pied after first molt?

here is a pic of my cobalt spangle budgie Ricky Bobby. he had solid blue body color as a baby, but has molted into a banded pied as an adult. is this normal?

That is very interesting, not something I have seen before, but most of my birds had already been through their first moult before I take them in.

yes, he is in fact the same bird. he is just about a year old now, I got him at about 8 weeks old. quite a transformation.

I was joking by the way, I'm sue he's the same bird.

We've seen birds here that started out just blue with a little bit of yellow, but when they had their first moult they are green because the yellow gets stronger.

But I haven't seen anything like your guy.

his first batch of chicks has just fledged. they are 4 weeks old. I have temporarily moved them to a separate cage so he can wean them and give moma break for a few weeks!

they are both very tame. I only handled them while cleaning the nest box daily, but never hand fed them at all. the older chick, Kiwi, looks just like his mom. the second, Pineapple, got the spangle from dad. I’m curious to see if either will develop the dominant pied markings after their first molt like their father.
