So I recently acquired a cage from my cousin who’s chinchilla died a few months ago. It’s a two level cage with a divider in the middle. I’m almost positive the bar spacing is larger than 1/2 inch, but it’s such a nice cage that I was given for cheap. Is there anything I can add to help prevent my budgie from getting stuck? Or just improve the bars?

The bar spacing should be around 12-15mm apart. Any bigger and your birds head could get stuck.

I'd say bigger than 1.3cm then it's going to be too big.
You can't stop them from getting their head stuck if all the bars are too big, no.
For safety reasons you'll have to not get this cage. It's just not worth the risk.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. You could put fine mesh around the outside of the cage, but it would have to be super-tight to not leave space for a budgie to put its head through the bars, and mesh is a b*#ch of a thing to pull tight. Fixing the mesh to the bars would need to be done safely so that no wires were a potential danger, as well.

I, personally don't think it's worth the risk.
