Hello is anyone familiar with ecotrition essential blend for parakeets? I am having a terrible time trying to get my little loves to eat anything. It’s been six months for my male and I just recently got my female. Both are pet shop birds & both were older when I got them so probably raised on just seeds & millet. I introduce everything every day variety of vegetables and fruit pretty much one thing at a time chopped up fine, big huge chunks, hanging from skewers, hidden in their seed, you name it I’ve done it. Even sprigs of parsley and basil dripping wet for them to play in. Absolutely nothing ever. I do plan to continue giving them food, however..... What do you think of the Ecotrition Essential Blend for parakeets? It says it has fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and soybeans. I’m thinking that might be good while I’m still trying to introduce the food. They seem to like it Of course I have no idea if they are just picking out the seeds and not eating anything else in it LOL Any thoughts?

With any of those mixes you cannot be sure that they aren't simply picking out their favourite bits. I am not familiar with this mix - I would presume it is an American brand? If you can find any seeding wild grass pick a few heads and offer them these. This is their natural feed and they don't seem to have a problem recognising it as food. Once you get them started you can then introduce other things in amongst this, such as the herbs, dandelion, thistles etc and then move on to your run-of-the-mill kitchen vegetables. That may help.

Have you tried sweetcorn? I've never seen a budgie refuse it. Sometimes I give them it on a plate.

I have not! so sweet corn, meaning corn on the cob? never thought of it. geez and I thought I’ve tried everything. so if you’re talking about corn on the cob, you cook it and give it to them cold? or is sweet corn something else specifically for birds?

Raw is always best. And yes, corn on the cob is what Marianne is meaning. I'm not sure if the worse mess is made by the human cutting a round off a cob (I use a bread/serrated knife) or the empty kernels tossed out all over the floor! What is seeding grass? Just what you might imagine - any field/meadow/paddock native grasses that have gone to seed. Even weeds in your garden that have a seed head on them. Do not try ornamental grasses, though. There is concern that these may contain toxins that might be dangerous to our little birds. Edit that to add ... not from busy highways, or anywhere that uses herbicides, pesticides, even fertilizer is considered to be not a good thing.
