You have to love a baby ... samwiseg , this is one I think you will luuurveThis is a newly hatched scrub turkey chick. We have put him into the aviary because the bast#*d butcher birds wanted to make a meal of him - they were hunting in a pack. Have to give all kudos to OH for the rescue as I wasn't even home at the time. Well done HIM. He tells me "You taught me well, Grasshopper." He is well, not injured at all, but we need to find the right time and place to release him. Dawn is probably best if we move him away (would only do so because of the BB - that can stand for butcherbird or blood* bast*$ds) Now we just have to keep him alive ......

The first photo has my eyes totally confused. Obviously I can see the chick, but are we looking at the other side of the screen? Congratulations to your Hubby. Things must be rubbing off on to him.

They hatch completely self-sufficient and independent, jellybean. Not parental guidance at all. I'm pretty sure his daddy was the tom who was killed last week.

Do the larger photos make a difference, OP? I was in the aviary with him, but he was up against the mesh.

When I went out this afternoon to check on him ... we will call him "him", there were two butcherbirds hanging around - one on the ground just outside where I had taken the previous photos from (chicky was in his box, hiding), and the other on the roof of the garden shed right next to it. I talked to a wildlife carer about releasing him; he suggested releasing him somewhere else so that the butcherbirds weren't aware of him. I really wonder now whether he would stand a chance here around the house.

As adults are they able to stand up to the butcher birds Hezz? If so, couldn't you keep him until he was a bit older, then release him.

I can see the chick but what is the background in the top photo? Sorry, but I cannot make head nor tail of it. Very Frustrating this condition.

It looks like you may have a new housebird Hezz. You may have to look after him now, or the butcherbirds will get him. Because, surely you wont be able to release him once you have looked after him?

OP, in the first photo, on the right there are some leaves, they may look like tiny birds to you?

Thank you Marianne, but that is not what I am referring to. What I see is the chick and the leaves on the floor. Behind that I see what I think ist mesh of the aviary and beyond that is light green diagonal post and what looks like more leaves and a bird with its tail in the air. Then spread all over the ground is leaf litter all on the outside of the aviary. Sorry to be a pain.

'He' is so cute Hezz, well done you (grasshopper) for saving him. It's nice to know they are self sufficient from that age and I sincerely hope he is one of the fledglings from the daddy who was run over. That means there may be others hatched? Brownie points for OH too!!

The bird with a tail in the air is also a leaf, there are several leaves pointing upwards outside the aviary that are the same colour as the chick inside the aviary. I was confused by them at first.
There are also all of the golden leaves that you have already identified.
