As previous posted we brought Charlie home on Wednesday. He has settled well into his cage and is eating well. He isn’t frightened of me and sits happily on my finger. He has spells of playing around his cage, but mainly he looks quite lonely. I sit and talk to him often and he listens. But he really comes to life when he hears the birds outside. He shouts to them and jumps at the sides of his cage trying to get out.........I Havnt let him out yet, I don’t think he is ready yet? I keep the radio on for him when I am not in the room. Maybe I am expecting too much? Also I sit in the conservatory when it’s sunny,do you think it’s a good idea to bring the cage in with me, or would moving him upset him?

Are you training him? Now is when you should be spending time going through his training sessions - stepping up and down, target training if that is the way you want to go, and if he is stepping up when required, why not let him out? Get him used to stepping onto your finger or hand, even a stick and being put back into the cage. this will save you a lot of grief in the long run. Start out in a small room so that you don't spend ages "chasing" him around the room to go back inside.
Where ever you are in the house, as long as it is bird safe, take him with you, let him explore and get used to other noises that might be around.

Training: He steps up willingly onto my finger and I am saying up as he does it, but he doesn’t stay there for long. He isn’t interested in millet yet ,so he has no reason to stay there. He doesn’t mind me gentle touching him anywhere... I get the feeling that as soon as I open his door he will be off! He is seven weeks old on Wednesday, so I was trying not to rush him....... So any help is gratefully received............Yesterday I took his cage into the conservatory (not in the sun) thinking he would like it but he was frightened. Too much too soon?

I don’t introduce too many changes when I first get a budgie. I leave the cage covered on 3 sides for at least a few days so they can adjust to the surroundings. I think Impy had her cage covered for a week or two. Speak to him and try offering millet but take it slowly. He’s only just arrived to your place so is probably feeling a bit scared.

If there are other noises etc around, yes he will take a little time to get used to them. Let him see that you are always there. It's only been a few days, so if that wasn't a success, leave it for another few days, until you feel that he is becoming more relaxed.
