Hello from Minnesota in USA! I have a budgie going on nine days now. He still seems very scared. I play the sounds of other budgies and he chirps away and flies around his cage but he still seems scared of me. I talk to him several times a day and say the same thing each time. This week I have been just putting my arm in his cage several times but never try to touch him. How long should it take him to trust me? He just sits and poops in his water dish so that I change it every day. I love the advice on not staring at him I never knew that information. Edie

Move his water so that it is up next to a perch, not under one. You may have to play around with cage setup until you get it right.
As for the trust issue, that depends on the nature of the bird and how well, also how much, it has been handled previously. There are no hard and fast rules or time frames. Patience is key and allowing the bird to learn to trust. If you rush things you will be setting your bonding back not forward. Friendships take time to evolve, and that is what you are trying to build - a friendship, with one party not naturally drawn to the other. Predator and prey don't usually form bonds so you are having to overcome the bird's first instinct which is to not trust you.
