Captain America left for Rainbow bridge this morning. It was a shock and unexpected as she had been in quite good health. She had a lipoma which had not grown much more from when it started last year and she had been coping fine. I do not believe this is the reason she has left us. This morning she looked tired when i let all the birds out, and half an hour later she was on the aviary floor in the sunshine. Captain America was named so as I was on holiday in 2014 when i got a message a budgie had been found and give to our vets and needed a home. I called the vets and said i would be happy to donate to a charity of their choice and rehome her as soon as i got back from holiday. Fast forward a week and we were home and i was at the vets picking up this lovely little blue budgie, and although Captain America is associated with masculinity, it just seemed appropriate to call her this. Captain America was only small but so cute and quite tame. I suspect whomever had lost her was quite upset but after not being able to find the owner i hoped i would be able to give her a good life. She first paired up with Percy as his 'bit on the side', before Bruce came to live with us and they became a first item. Bruce is a gorgeous, well natured grey budgie and Captain America was smitten. He was attentive and loyal - it was all she ever wanted. They spent almost 3 blissful years happily together, preening, sitting on swings and singing together, feeding and following each other around. Captain America - it was a joy to have known you and i know your life was a happy one. You did things your way, and i am so glad you did not suffer, yet at the same time so heartbroken that you have left us. Rest in peace my sweet girl, I will look after Bruce for you. Until we meet again I love you xx

Thank you all. As far as I know she never suffered and it was quick. For that, for her, I am thankful. Poor Bruce is lost. Keeps going inside and singing for her. He saw her go but I don't think he understood.

Oh no another loss this week, gosh I’m so sorry clt80. What a terribly tough time you’re having! Hugs to you and I’m hope your ok. The joy of owning and loving a pet outweighs the inevitable outcome of losing them one day so hold onto that thought. It helps to have the understanding and support of the forum people too who understand what it’s like to lose your little bird. RIP Captain America. Fly high with little Cora and and others xxx

You are right Jane, having others who understand does help. It helps to have acknowledgement that these budgies did matter, and that they were very much loved and will be sorely missed: everybody on here gets that as they feel the same.
Someone I know said to me on the day I found out I'd lost one well least you did What you could and can go to bed happy....!!!!!!!!

Someone I know said to me on the day I found out I'd lost one well least you did What you could and can go to bed happy....!!!!!!!! I know it’s shocking really the attitudes of some people. Someone said to my friend when they told them about Squawks troubles that why bother with vets etc as I could get another one for £20. Someone else said to me when I lost Squawk oh well at least you’ve got 2 more. It degenerates their importance to us and how much they are part of the family. 15 weeks today I lost Squawk and I’m still in tears at times as the loss is so hard. These little birds are so special and I’m just glad we have each other on the forum that understands. Take care as you’ve had it particularly rough this year as we all understand and empathise on here.

I have had similar uncaring remarks over the years. One person, who I thought better of, made one of those "it's just a budgie, get another one" kind of remarks. She had this little dog that she carried everywhere, kissed and cuddled, so I said to her "how would you feel if someone said that to you about Jaffer (the dog)? You would hate it, and probably hate them for it." Don't belittle my choice of pet.
