OK I'm not getting how to reply to someone's comment on here π It's a pumice perch, is sandpaper also bad for them too? As I thought it was good for their nails and beaks? I've tried chunks between bars and in a bowl but not interested, I'll try grating some up into a bowl for her, luckily it's the same sort of food my bunnies eat so no wastage in this house π Shes very vocal lady, always chirping away at music or me talking, just not very tame yet

So this happened today! How much millet did he get for that, you ask? None at all! I had his regular seed mix in my hand! I even got some little beak nibbles on my fingers. He does have pellets in there too...but like veggies, it's an ongoing battle. I lecture him often lol

Hi lucydeprez. If you want to quote what someone has said, just click on their post where it says 'quote' and it will come up in the reply box, where you type the reply. If you just want to alert someone, click on their name and see how they call themselves then do an @ and copy and paste their name after it, which will highlight it in blue on your post as well as alert the person in their profile. I know, clear as mud!!! Have a play around, you will get it. Anyway, yes, gritty perches and sandsheets are really bad for budgies feet. I have said before as have many others, I don't know why manufactures keep making them and selling them, they know nothing about budgie health or budgies full stop!! Little rant there!! Also on another note, why are you trying to feed pellets? Budgies don't eat pellets in the wild and as long as you give a healthy balanced diet of veg, seed, millet, cuttle and iodine block as well as oyster shell grit they don't need much else. Even so, that sounds quite a lot!!

Are pellets not recommended? Here in the states pellets are pushed as THE best thing for budgies. I keep hearing how a seed diet leads to fatty liver disease. I don't think Sky has ever seen pellets (or veggies for that matter) so he's just been throwing them around. I've gotten him to at least nibble the kale, don't think he actually ate any, but it's a start.

I was going to say all the shops round here recommend sandpaper and rough perches, I've took the sandpaper off the perches which I can and I've ordered some real wood perches off amazon which should arrive next week. What do you recommend for the bottom of the cage? Many thanks

Just plain old newspaper. I use white chip shop paper.

Unfortunately this is the case, but they are not the best thing for budgies. I wouldn't say they were the best thing for any bird. Budgies are a desert bird, they don't do well on high-calcium diets which pellets usually contain; a mix of seed and pellets is okay but the more important ingredient in their diet should be fresh foods. Vegetables rather than fruits, due to the sugar content of fruits, and if you can get hold of any sort of seeding grasses - lawn, meadow, fields, paddocks, weeds - as long as they haven't been sprayed (pesticide/herbicide or even fertilizer) and not from a busy roadside, then pick some of these for your birds. This is their natural food. If you do get your bird eating pellets, continue to feed them but not as the integral part of the diet as it can be handy to have them eating them at certain times. A pellet-only diet can cause as many problems as a seed-only diet, so variety is your best friend. Keep the percentage of fatty seeds in the mix down as much as possible - don't buy blends that have more than 5% oil seeds, most have too many oats as well, you can either pull them out or look into comparable finch mixes. I feed my buds a finch mix, oh and your budgie blends will be made up of a number of different millets, so your birds will not be missing out if they don't get millet sprays.

Brilliant thank you very much. I'm finding it very hard to get her to eat anything but seed, I broke up the millet today and she wouldn't touch it, also tried grated carrot and crumbled some broccoli too but didn't touch it. She's a very stubborn bird π. I've given her small pieces of bell pepper and cauliflower tonight and put that in her bowl and a thin slice of apple on a clip to see how that goes down. My bunnies eat all this food too so am able to feed them what she won't eat π Struggling to get her tame enough to perch on my finger too seen as though she'll only eat seeds. I tried putting seed in my hand but the whole hand being out rather than just one finger scares her......

Thanks so much! I'm afraid to take anything from outside, everyone around here is obsessed with putting poison on their lawns, including businesses. My lawn is all natural and full of dandelions lol. I read a small blurb somewhere recently about sprouting seeds on your own without soil....I'm going to read up on that because it seems like something easy, safe, and that Sky might enjoy. I'll also keep trying with the veggies

Also.....He perched on my hand without millet or seed! He will only hop on my finger from one particular perch. But if he's not on that perch, he'll climb around his cage to get there and then just hop right on, even from a distance!! He does give me a sort of stink eye when he finds out I don't have any food, but he doesn't leave. In fact, I had trouble getting him off my finger and onto a perch lol. My arm gets tired after a while! I feel like we're really making some progress! He even let me take my thumb and (slowly) get close to his beak (I got nibbles) and rub his "chin feathers"

You can certainly feed your bud dandelion seeds/flowers/leaves, even the roots. I have to admit to having little success with dandelion but maybe they are spoilt for choice with their seeding grasses. Some birds will take to sprouts where they won't to fresh veggies, why, who would know! It doesn't matter what you sprout, it can be the bird's own seed or those meant for human consumption from health food stores etc. All you need is a glass jar with a wide mouth, something like muslin cloth (I use a clean kitchen wipe) to put over the mouth of the jar. Just google sprouting your own seeds - how it will work for you depends on your particular climate.
