Sometimes one thinks they are doing the best thing, but it doesn’t always work out to be(e)the best after all.
A bumble bee was wandering round on the ground in my garden two days ago and being fearful of him being trodden on by me, or eaten by Aurelia (chook) I picked him up and put him somewhere safe. He obviously had problems flying, and it wasn’t exactly a warm summers’ day, so he kept getting himself in a pickle. I just kept checking on him as he wandered around my very sparse flower beds. I carried him from flower to flower where he extracted nectar and got covered in pollen, but the afternoon was getting on and he really wasn’t in a fit state to leave outside.
So I brought him indoors, watered down a little honey and put it on my finger for him to eat. (video to follow). No sooner had I done this he really gorged himself for a good ten minutes or so and seemed to perk up. As it is very cold of a night time I kept him in to stay the night.
I was surprised to see that in the morning he was still ‘with us’!!
It’s now two days later, and he is still with us!! I let him go free in the garden yesterday which was thankfully quite sunny and warm. He wandered about, luckily I always found him. He was practising his flying techniques all afternoon yesterday. He couldn’t get very far and fell and landed in all sorts of places but fortunately I was always able to find him. He seems to wear himself out very quickly.
I can only guess that he has arrived too early for our summer so last night was his second night inside and he is quite active this morning. Fortunately the weather is going to be good here for the next few days so he will go outside a little later when it warms up. Hopefully he will be able to go about his business under his own steam very soon. The only problem is the cold nights. We will have to see.
I have to admit that I put him outside early yesterday morning and when I went to check he had keeled over on one side and I presumed he had died. However, I saw his leg twitch so I brought him back inside and he revived. It must have been too cold for him, thank heavens I brought him in!
Daft or mad or what am I?
I now wonder how many days I have to nurse-maid this, not so little, bumble bee? I have called him Freddie btw!! Now watch the video, not perfect as I had to do it with my phone and my left hand!!
