Well she's at it again, she is persistently chewing and ripping up paper, I presume she is wanting to nest. Do I keep changing her paper every 3 or 4 hours or leave it in for the day and change it tomorrow. She has been at it for 2 solid days, to the point where she is hardly eating. I have put some millet very low so she can actually eat some thing. This bird will give me a nervous breakdown.
Any thoughts?

Leave it in as you would normally do, I would. I don't think you need to worry about her feeding herself (another thought - is Pip feeding her?) if everything is the same as it usually is. I used to worry about how little seed Mango consumed from her pot, until I took into account how much Misty was feeding her. Weigh her on a daily basis if you are really concerned.

Thanks Hezz, I have seen her eat this morning and have a drink, Pip is feeding her when she wants it, other wise he gets sent away in no uncertain terms. I have never known her be this obsessed before, she seems a little calmer this morning, the last two days she was on a mission and nobody was going to stop her. These birds don't half cause some anxiety

That's for sure!! Hopefully she is over her nesting for "King and country" mode. Maybe she missed you more than she is willing to admit ... now you are home again, all is well with her world, and that means shred and destroy.

Does the change in weather make them more nesty?

There is something definitely going on. I am having to put food in the bottom of the cage for her as Pip will not leave her alone. He's not aggressive but just pesters her constantly and she is getting no peace. I'm wondering if to put him in a separate cage for a few hours to let her have some peace. Four days of constant shredding now and no rest whatsoever, she has more energy than a Duracell bunny.

I buy the paper that chips are wrapped in from the fish and chip shop. Perhaps that's why she loves to shred, must taste of fish and chips.

The warmer weather/longer days will definitely have an impact. Can you put her in a room where you can pull the curtains and leave it dark for longer ... and put her to bed earlier?? A separate cage in separate room is all part of the mini-stress needed to break an egg-layer of the habit. Might definitely be worth going that track before she decides that eggs are a good idea.

Thanks Hezz I was thinking of putting Pip in another cage, but now you pointed it out it seems logical to put Jo in one. I never thought of that Will have a go and see what happens, thanks. Hope you have had a relaxing enjoyable day.

Well I now have a big box in my living room with her cage on so that they can see one anotherš¬ She is now cleaning herself and settling down, thank goodness.

Ok Hezz forgot to put her in a different room. She has slept most of the time, in between cleaning and preening. She seems calmer now. I'll give her until tomorrow and see how she goes. After Tuesday we have our 3 year old grand daughter coming whose like a whirlwind. So I need to crack this.

She has really been going through something! I know many years ago when I bred hookbills, the parakeets never used nesting material, just a empty nesting box (1983 was the year). When they were ready to breed the female would let the male feed her and she would go in and out of the nest box. I would check her vent area for a lump, that means she is ready to lay her eggs.
I'm so glad she has settled down, she's a real beauty!

After Tuesday we have our 3 year old grand daughter coming whose like a whirlwind. So I need to crack this. She's probably exhausted from her frantic paper shredding. Does Pip not go over to harass her through the bars?? I did have to laugh at your solution - big cardboard box in the living room topped by a little blue cage. Poor Jo, what a let down! Not quite the palace HRH is used to frequenting.

I tried Jo in this morning and he will not leave her alone, so she took to the bottom of the cage. I took her out and put her back in the small cage and she is happily eating, whereas he is not eating. He's a big boy so he wont starve, always likes his food. Hezz, how many days is this likely to last or do I need to buy 2 separate cages? I would have to get smaller ones as I don't have the room.
