Charlie who is five months old in 10 days, has been biting / gnawing the bars of his cage after eating for about two month now. I have posted about this before........I have tried everything to stop him. I love him dearly but the noise is driving us mad. I am sure its become a really bad habit and he just can’t seem to stop.....His cage is covered in rattan strips ( he does chew at them ) ....He has a nice big cage with lots of toys and comes out at least twice a day for over an hour each time, so he definitely can’t be bored. He has rubbed the feathers off above his cere too. He is healthy and happy but spending too much time chewing the bars......He eats then goes straight away to chew/ bite. please please can anyone help my sanity with some ideas?

Wooden spring clipped pegs. The sort used for hanging washing up. Don't use plastic. Everytime you catch him bit the bars c;ip a peg in that spot. He might bite the peg but will give up after a while. I cured a hen a while back, so I know it works.

You will need to keep up with him. As he moves you ,move the pegs. Also insert the pegs so they fit across a couple of bars. As soon as you see him have ago at the bars put the pegs in place. Keep at it and he will get the idea. Don't expect it to work in one go. I know it works, I have done it with Edward and she was a master at stripping paint off the bars. I did have to put multiple pegs in one place so she couldn't get to the bars. Mind you she did a job and a half on the pegs. Keep at it and it will work.

If yours is a painted cage check where he has been grating. If there is paint mising then he needs stopping.

It’s a vision cage , and I phoned the manufacturer who said it is coated and is safe. Charlie doesn’t grate in any particular place either . Before he started doing it, he had a bell toy with cotton rags on it and he used to use that to chew on when he had eaten......I removed it because I was told it wasn’t safe......and that when the bar chewing started.......I have put it back to see if he would stop, but all that has happened is that he is now using both..... I have to say the rag chewing is at least quiet!! I wonder if it’s like a baby needing a dummy?

You are right, I hadn’t thought of it like that. The rag toy is just chewed after he has had a bit of millet so not a problem to remove that. I spent a good hour this afternoon with the pegs , I think he thinks it’s a game, but he gave up first. He always seems to eat at about six o’clock, so I am ready and waiting with the pegs, I don’t intend to let him win!

Op, just to update you....I spent an hour playing 'Move the Peg game' with Charlie. At first he thought it was a fun game....then he started to get cross.....then he gave in...... So I won tonight . Let’s see how long before he "hopefully' gives in. 🤞🏻
