I realise I haven't been on the forum for months and for that I can only apologise, we have had a merger at work and its been really horrible and I've suffered with stress for a while. I stopped all social media not just the forum but I felt I owed it to Ernie to make this post. I don't expect any sympathy as I haven't been around but just thought I better let you know. Ernie was completely fit and healthy which makes this doubly hard. I came down stairs first thing this morning to find what can only be described as a massacre. There was blood everywhere and I mean everywhere, the walls, floor, cage everywhere! Ernie was laid on the bottom of the cage in a pool of blood. I have examined him and it looks like he has fell and broken the big wing feather and bled out after an obvious struggle around the cage. The blood was still wet so I have no idea when it happened. I don't know if I could have stopped the bleeding if I had been around but I will never know. The worst thing is that Alex is away in Belgium so I had to phone him and tell him. Those of you that know me will know I lost two birds to toxic poisoning when I was away in York, and my beautiful friend Pickle died as a result of trying to save him from a tumour. Perry died after being trapped in a self closing door. I feel very unlucky right now. I don't want to bury him on my own so I have wrapped him in tissue paper and put him in the freezer to wait till Alex is back on Monday. I am upset obviously and Eric is a little subdued and looking all over, but he is eating ok. I hope the fact that he saw Ernie laying there for a while will have helped him understand. What a sugary day. Definitely no more I can't stand the heartbreak, all my grief for Pickle has also come flooding back. So so sad. These little birds get into your heart so much. I am broken. R.I.P. little man and fly high over rainbow bridge.

Having had 14 birds pass away in the last 10 years (some very close together), I can understand that it's upsetting for you Helen.
But you really had no control over this at all. It was an accident that could happen with any "night fright".

I am so sorry you have had to go through such heartbreak. Fly high little Ernie - I'll bet that Pickle is helping him settle in over at Rainbow Bridge & they will be nattering about how lucky they were to live with with you. It's a good sign that Eric is eating. Thinking of you all.

I am so sorry to read this Helenmat, my condolences. Fly high Ernie.
Try to take solace that Ernie had a happy life with you. Given a choice of 20 years in a hell hole or a year of happiness and joy in a loving home I'd take the latter everytime. Ernie got more happiness with you than most birds get in a lifetime.
I too feel that I owe it to buds who has passed to write in fields of millet, I feel its part of the grieving process as others on her understand our loss.
Don't apologise for not being around. Sometimes life takes over and due to stress we can't find time to come on social media as we are so busy trying to keep our heads above water.
I will be thinking about you today, Take care x

I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost Ernie.
I'm sure that he had a happy life with you and Eric, and you have no need to apologise for not being around recently.

Thanks all of you, it is nice to share with you and your kind words make such a difference, I have shed a few tears today I'll be honest. Eric seems quite good considering, although he doesn't want to stay out of the cage for more than a few seconds and is very quiet. I keep going in and picking him up and giving him lots of attention. I spoke to Alex again later when we had both calmed down a bit. He did say he saw a new blood feather growing last week after Ernie lost his tail feather so that must have been what got broke in the fall. He's just upset I am on my own, but I have had a visit from my daughter and Mum and Dad today. I did have a change of heart though and decided to bury Ernie in the garden with the others under the special bird bath we bought after Pickle died as a memorial.
