Hello. My name is Agnes. I am new here. I got a budgie from my friend a week ago. She had it for like 2-3 years but she wanted to give it to me because she wouldn't spend much time with the bird. So at first everything seemed fine. Bird started singing, he is pretty much tame so he is climbing on my arms, hand. he was eating a lot, flying around the house. Couple of days ago I noticed he was biting bars in the cage, attacking his reflection in the mirror (I removed the mirror), barely eating (much more food left for I think two days. Even now he is sleeping. When I turn off the light and go to bed I can hear that he is walking around the cage, I noticed he was even hanging on cage ceiling. Weird. It lasts a few minutes and he stops. In the morning he is very silent, starts chirping when I turn on the music on my mobile. And recently I noticed he was eating something from the cage floor, not sure if it was his droppings ( ) or just seeds. I use to have two parakeets like 7 years ago, not that tame but their behaviour was soooo much different. I am new here so I have no idea where I should place my question, so I created an mew thread. Feel free to move it to a more appropriate thread. Thank you for help, Agnes

Hi from me and my two. Budgies do like noise, I have my radio on all day for them especially when I am out. Mine have also ate their own poo once or twice. Are you sure he was attacking the mirror or was he just feeding it, is the mirror all smudged, like it has had seed all over it. My Pip constantly feeds and chats away to his mirror and banging it about. Do you cover him at night? I put a black sheet over mine so they know it is bed time and settle down, they like about 12 hours sleep.
You are doing well if he is tame, as for biting the bars, they do take time to settle in.
Hope this helps for now, someone else will be on later who can help more.

Thanks He just flew out of his cage (it is open all day but I supervise him) and sat on my arm and later tried to feed from my plate haha. It seem he is ok, I was worried because he is very silent, quite often. Right now, when I am typing this, he is just walking up and down my leg, sooooo sweeeet!!!!

We moan when they are noisy and worried when they are quiet, we can't win. He sounds lovely. I presume he is called Bird.

I don't cover the cage, my room is actually very dark. I think it may be enough...

His name is Toto (given by his first owner). He doesn't respond to it that much

That's a nice name. It's a routine to get them into by putting a cover over them, otherwise they will be chirping till you go bed and you will not get any peace and quiet. We had a new budgie on Thursday and I let him seetle for a few days but tonight he is covered over and is fine. He is about 13 weeks old. We still have little chirps but it gives us a break from of the flipping noise. I have a very verbal boy!!!!

I also have the radio on all day. Budgies don’t like silence.

Toto was more than likely just a little confused about his change in environment - new house, new person, new smells etc. It can make them a bit apprehensive, just like us. I'm pleased for you that he seems to have decided to trust you and now wishes to interact.

Thanks for your responses I think it was a false alarm. He is very active, flies around, sits on my arm or travels up and down my leg, arm, even floor. He just takes naps during the day, otherwise he seems to be ok.
