Thank you all for your kind words and asking about him, he is fine if looking a little tatty! I did try and clean him up a bit but inevitably there are still a few light remnants of blood stained feathers around. I just cant get over how it gets everwhere?! He must have tail twizzled quite a bit is all I can say! I know what you mean, it took my hours to clean up after Ernie passed. It was everywhere. I still found a few spots several days later up the wall. Grim.

Poor Murph, and and you sam, it's a horrible thing to find. This happened to my old Jo a couple of times, his FM made it more of a problem. I remember coming down one morning and there was blood everywhere it looked like a massacre had taken place, thank goodness it managed to seal itself that time and the other time i caught it and sealed it. They don't half play havoc with our nerves don't they

So glad you caught this in time and that Murph is ok now samwiseg. Blood feathers can be really nasty sometimes as Murphs was.

Can I ask how you manage to stop the flow with flour? I am just wondering how to hold a budgie & apply it.

You should be able to plug the broken shaft with the flour, sweetpea. How you hold the bird will depend on where the broken feather is, and four hands would certainly work better than two.

Thanks Hezz. I don't have four hands so I'd have to improvise in some way if it happened here. Perhaps get a bowl of flour & dip them in...

Generally it is the long feathers that break and bleed so badly, so my approach would be (I've not had to do this, mind) to hold the bird down on the benchtop, leaving one hand to apply the flour or pepper. I would use the cayenne pepper, myself. I feel it would be less likely to go everywhere, and will only give the bird a bit of pain relief if it needs to clean up any mess on its feathers. I'll also add the comment that my buds are used to being held, cupped and manipulated, so I feel their wriggle-factor is probably a LOT less than some.

I too only have one pair of hands sweetpea but the trouble I had believe it or not was actually finding the source of it... as there was a lot of blood it was hard to see where it was coming from. Only bit of advice I can give to anyone is I use a cotton pad, put on some cornflour and hold it firmly to the area to hope that I can staunch it. I was able to then clean him up a little afterward and then find the problem feather. Poor little guy did squeak a bit when I found it to put pressure on but the feather did in fact come away naturally

I can’t quite believe it but tonight I’ve gone in to close Eric’s cage and he too had blood splats up the wall and on my blinds. Luckily it wasn’t still bleeding. I scooped him up and opened his wings and there down the edge was a broken feather. Flipping heck, gave me a fright. I softly chastised him for worrying me so. So happy I can easily pick him up though. No stress there.

Holy moly helenmat. When you buy a budgie, they should come with a defibrillator 😀 Glad Eric was ok.
