My first post and what a sad post this is to make.
We took one of our boys, Pipsqueak, in to the Avian veterinarian to be treated for Scaly Face. He had a shot of Ivermec around 4 pm. He was normal although skittish until about 11 pm, when he started to act strange, and convulse. We live in a small town with no emergency vet services, and the only Avian vets opened at 8 am the following morning.
I won't go into details but the convulsions and seizures happened most of the night and it was traumatic to watch. I can only imagine what it was like for him to go through. I will never forgive myself for his pain. Aside from the Scaly Face he was a happy bird...
I feel so horrible for my decision to allow him to have the Ivermec shot. Although the vet said that this was rare and she has never seen this happen before I will never allow my birds to have a shot again and will only allow topical now. My biggest fear has always been a reaction to shots and now it has come true. I have done some reading (too little too late) and in some dogs (herding) I know that there is a gene called MDR-1 where the Ivermec can cross the blood brain barrier and not be excreted and cause toxic build up... I wonder how this affects Parakeets/Budgies...
He has been checked again by the vet and his breathing is shallow but normal and his heart rate is good. She said that this toxic reaction has no antidote and that only time can heal this -- if at all.
We have been giving him droplets of water and so far one drop of Ensure shake. It is now almost 24h since the first convulsion and he's still largely unresponsive
His bonded partner Kiwi (another male) is completely distraught and skittish. Doesn't know what to make of the situation at all, as they are separated due to Pipsqueak not being able to move.
